Taking root among the living: afrodiasporic science fiction in Octavia E. Butler's Parables

Abstract

Octavia E. Butler contribuiu significativamente para o gênero da ficção científica, redefinindo seus limites por meio de narrativas guiadas por protagonistas negras. Esta tese analisa os livros Parábola do Semeador (1993) e Parábola dos Talentos (1998) com o objetivo de examinar como a fabulação e a perspectiva especulativa de Butler dialogam com a experiência diaspórica Africana sob uma lente Afrofuturista. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi mapear como a jornada de migração forçada de Lauren Olamina por um Estados Unidos distópico de 2024 reflete narrativas da diáspora negra. Além disso, o estudo analisa como a filosofia Earthseed, centrada no Deus da Mudança, enfatiza o papel essencial do conhecimento ancestral na formação de uma comunidade de resistência ao preconceito e à perseguição religiosa. O título ?Taking Root Among the Living? reimagina o Destino de Earthseed, que tem como propósito ?criar raízes entre as estrelas?, no contexto de The Books of the Living, os escritos filosóficos centrais à duologia de Butler. Enquanto Olamina vislumbra o destino da humanidade nas estrelas, esta tese redireciona esse olhar para as pessoas que vivem a experiência da diáspora. Aquelas que, em meio ao deslocamento e à luta, cultivam as sementes da transformação na sobrevivência coletiva, na memória e na fabulação da experiência afrodiaspórica. Dessa forma, esta tese argumenta que a filosofia Earthseed de Butler mobiliza a Mudança como uma força transformadora que promove agência, oferece esperança e reimagina a diáspora não como deslocamento, mas como um processo coletivo de pertencimento. Os resultados apresentados nesta tese afirmam a presença crítica de Octavia Butler na ficção científica e seu legado no Afrofuturismo, posicionando sua obra e seu conceito de Mudança como essenciais para a fabulação de futuros alternativos.

Abstract: Octavia E. Butler contributed significantly to the science fiction genre, reshaping its boundaries through narratives guided by Black female protagonists. This dissertation explores Parable of the Sower (1993) and Parable of the Talents (1998) with the aim of examining how Butler?s fabulation and speculative perspective engage with the African diasporic experience through an Afrofuturist lens. The objective of this research was to map how Lauren Olamina?s forced migration journey across a dystopic 2024 United States mirrors narratives of Black diaspora. Furthermore, the study analyzes how the duology?s Earthseed philosophy of God of Change emphasizes the essential role of ancestral knowledge in shaping a community of resistance against bigotry and religious persecution. The title Taking Root Among the Living reimagines the Earthseed Destiny, which is intended ?to take root among the stars,? in the context of The Books of the Living, the philosophical writings central to Butler?s duology. While Olamina envisions humanity's destiny in the stars, this dissertation redirects that gaze toward the people living through the diaspora. Those who, in the midst of displacement and struggle, nurture the seeds of transformation in the collective survival, memory, and fabulation of the Afrodiasporic experience. In this manner, this dissertation argues that Butler?s Earthseed philosophy mobilizes Change as a transformative force that enacts agency, offers hope, and reimagines diaspora not as displacement, but as collective becoming. The findings presented in this dissertation assert Octavia Butler?s critical presence in science fiction and a central legacy in Afrofuturism, positioning her work and her concept of Change as essential for the fabulation of alternative futures.
