Abstract: This study aims to analyze the relation between the figure and the formation of Biology and Science teachers and the emergence of the professional biologist in Brazil, based on legislation concerning to minimum curricula promulgated between 1962 and 1978 for courses of Natural History, Biological Sciences, and Science teaching degrees. The research is essentially qualitative in nature, built upon a literature review and document analysis, which constituting the primary methodology of the investigation. The legislation analyzed was mainly sourced from Revista Documenta, held in the archives of the Institute for Documentation and Research in Human Sciences at UDESC, in Florianópolis, SC, Brazil. Based on the source of analysis ? the legislation related to those minimum curricula ? the research is theoretically grounded in elements from Curriculum History and literature on the genesis of teacher education in Biology in Brazil, which has been heavily influenced by the model of technical rationality. Based on the results and discussions developed, when the professional regulation of biologists was established, by Law 6.684 of 1979, designating that the courses of Natural History, Biological Sciences, and Science teaching degrees were responsible for their formation, it brought with it and perpetuated, either implicitly or explicitly, curricular motivations and tensions rooted in the teacher?s education in Biology. Such motivations and tensions include, respectively: the need to establish a basic framework of professionals and to form teachers, and the emphasis on biological disciplines, bachelor degrees, and research, to the detriment of pedagogical subjects, teaching degrees, and teaching. Thus, after examining past minimum curricula and discussing their ideals and organization, it?s proposed and seek to defend the thesis that there is a deep relation between the figure and formation of Biology and Science teachers and the emergence of the professional biologist. Uncovering the origins of this relation, which continues, to a greater or lesser extent, to this day, allows to better understand why Biology curricula are as they are today.
