"I balanced all, brought all to mind": loyalties in Irish and British Great War poetry

Abstract

O objetivo desta dissertação é conduzir uma análise comparativa da poesia irlandesa sobre a Primeira Guerra Mundial com a poesia britânica referente ao mesmo conflito, tendo por foco a questão de lealdade e as razões para lutar apresentadas nos poemas. Um total de dezoito poemas são analisados através de close reading e atenção ao contexto histórico em torno do envolvimento irlandês e britânico na Guerra, bem como às relações entre os dois países à época do conflito. Na primeira parte da análise, poemas lidando com os conceitos de King and Country ou patriotismo são discutidos, seguidos por poemas que se posicionam em relação a valores de honra e morte gloriosa, bem como obras que empregam elementos religiosos. A análise então se volta para poemas cujo foco é o inimigo, uma lealdade aos companheiros, ou nos quais a lealdade está associada a laços locais ou regionais no lugar de conexões nacionais. A conclusão alcançada é que não há uma distinção marcada entre as questões levantadas em poemas irlandeses e britânicos da Primeira Guerra Mundial; no entanto, o tratamento que esses poemas dão a tais questões ocorre de variadas formas.</br>

Abstract :The purpose of this thesis is to conduct a comparative analysis of Irish poetry of the Great War and its British counterpart, with a focus on the issue of loyalty and the reasons for fighting presented in the poems. Eighteen poems in total are analysed via close reading and attention to the historical context surrounding Irish and British involvement in the war, as well as relations between the two countries around the time of the conflict. In the first part of the analysis, poems dealing with the concepts of King and Country or patriotism are discussed, followed by poems that engage with the values of honour and glorious death, as well as works making use of religious elements. Then, the analysis turns to poems focusing on the enemy, on a loyalty to brothers in arms, and poems in which loyalty is connected to local or regional ties, instead of national ones. The conclusion is that there is no clear-cut distinction between the issues raised in Irish and British poems of the Great War; however, the poems? treatment of such issues occurs in a variety of ways..<br>
