O aporte teórico adotado fundamenta-se principalmente nos estudos de Andrade (1998), Berman (2013), Aixelá (2013) e Venuti (2008).Abstract: Graciliano Ramos was a widely recognized Brazilian author, and many of his works have been translated into other languages. Among his English translations, the novel Vidas Secas (1938) stands out as the most popular, published under the title Barren Lives in 1965, 2024, and 2025, by different translators and publishing houses. In this work, the author presents the character of Fabiano, the vaqueiro, an emblematic figure of Northeastern Brazilian culture and an intrinsic element of the sertão. However, this figure has been scarcely explored within Translation Studies in the Portuguese?English pair. Therefore, this research aims to contribute to the expansion of studies on the translations of Graciliano Ramos?s works, particularly within this language pair. This study adopts a qualitative approach and a comparative method, based on the collation between the source text and its three English translations. The main objective is to analyze the translation choices involved in constructing the image of the Northeastern vaqueiro across the different versions of Barren Lives. To this end, the following specific objectives are defined: i) to identify the culture-specific items, from Aixelá?s (2013) perspective, related to the Northeastern vaqueiro in the source text and their correspondences in the three translations; ii) to categorize the translation strategies employed in rendering these elements, based on Aixelá?s (2013) theoretical model; iii) to analyze the tendencies of domestication and foreignization in the representation of the vaqueiro in each translation, in light of Venuti (2008) and Berman (2013); and iv) to discuss the implications of these strategies for constructing the image of the vaqueiro for foreign readers over the decades. The results demonstrate a predominance of domesticating tendencies in the three translations analyzed, as well as terminological oscillations, symbolic displacements, and stylistic reformulations that affect the cultural representation of the Northeastern vaqueiro to varying degrees. The research also observed that paratextual elements, such as book covers, progressively reduced the imagetic centrality of the vaqueiro over the decades. The theoretical framework is primarily grounded in the works of Andrade (1998), Berman (2013), Aixelá (2013), and Venuti (2008).
