Abstract: This doctoral dissertation, conducted within the research line Education and Childhood, investigated the educational and pedagogical relationships involved in the constitution of shared teaching in Early Childhood Education. A qualitative approach was adopted through an ethnographic case study conducted with Group 2 at an Early Childhood Education center within the Municipal Education Network of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The group consisted of 20 infants and toddlers (aged between 1 year and 2 years and 7 months) and seven education professionals: one full-time Early Childhood Education teacher, one full-time assistant teacher, two classroom assistants (working morning and afternoon shifts), one floating classroom assistant assigned to the afternoon shift, one full-time Special Education assistant teacher, and one Physical Education teacher. Data were generated through participant observation, written field notes, and photographic records collected between April and December 2023, with the researcher present three to four days per week. The empirical material was organized and interpreted using content analysis (Bardin, 2016), from which three broad analytical categories emerged, each unfolding into specific subcategories: (i) Structural conditions: (a) Time, space, and organization of the educational setting; (b) Relationships arising from professional roles and responsibilities; (ii) Relational dynamics between infants and education professionals in the constitution of teaching: (a) Infants challenge the constitution of teaching; (b) Relationships of affection and tension in the constitution of teaching; (iii) Relational dynamics among education professionals in the constitution of teaching: agreements, shared understandings, and exchanges of glances. The study was grounded in a relational perspective of teaching, drawing on Teixeira (2007), Tardif and Lessard (2009), and Freire (1996), aligned with the theoretical framework of the Pedagogy of Early Childhood Education (Rocha, 2001). The analysis of teaching relationships was further informed by Freire (1996), Tristão (2007), Guimarães (2012), Schmitt (2014), Gonçalves (2014), Coutinho (2017), Buss-Simão and Silva (2023), among other scholars. The findings revealed that the constitution of teaching is woven into everyday practice through educational and pedagogical actions collectively developed by education professionals alongside children. Shared teaching and its relational dimension emerge as distinctive characteristics of teaching in Early Childhood Education, making individual teaching unfeasible. Communication and dialogue, which are fundamental to articulating teaching focused on early childhood, require a collective committed to the social function of this educational stage. Such communication extends beyond verbal language, taking shape through exchanges of glances and gestures that express agreements grounded in the teaching team's shared theoretical perspective. The study also demonstrated that shared teaching does not depend on predefined procedures or prescribed steps; rather, it requires pedagogical planning, alterity, and dedicated time for alignment, dialogue, and collaborative exchange. Consequently, it is not possible to establish a universal model for shared teaching, as practice results from commitments collectively assumed by the teaching team. The exercise of shared teaching both affects and is affected by all members of the educational institution; therefore, actions and relationships directly influence collaboration among professionals. Understanding that the constitution of educational and pedagogical relationships impacts the entire educational community points to the notion of membranous activities (Charon, 2015), insofar as even a simple act of coordination among professionals can transform the organization of the institution, the experiences of infants, and the lives of their families. |
