Tradução comentada de contos da coletânea A Vocation and a Voice de Kate Chopin: tradução como promoção de diálogos feministas transnacionais

Abstract

Esta dissertação apresenta a tradução comentada de cinco contos da escritora estadunidense Kate Chopin (1850 -1905). São eles: The Story of an Hour (1894), An Egyptian Cigarette (1897), Two Portraits (the Nun and the Wanton) (1895), The White Eagle (1900), e Juanita (1894); textos concebidos para integrar a coletânea A Vocation and a Voice (1991), obra que teve sua primeira publicação adiada por quase um século devido à censura sofrida pela autora nos últimos anos de sua vida. Os cinco contos selecionados para compor o corpus da pesquisa foram escolhidos por apresentarem elementos que os qualificam como amostra representativa da coletânea ? obra que abrange quase toda a produção literária da segunda fase da autora. Entre as características mais marcantes dos textos, destacam-se a forma como abordam, em seus subtextos, temas que dialogam com questionamentos feministas contemporâneos. Nesse contexto, os contos selecionados contam com protagonistas mulheres, apresentadas sob uma perspectiva subjetiva e humanizada, além de abordarem temas como o confronto aos papéis de gênero, o moralismo maniqueísta cristão, e o abandono e marginalização de mulheres que não correspondem à sujeição imposta sobre seus corpos. Ademais, o presente estudo busca, além de contribuir com a tradução inédita de quatro contos de Chopin e a retradução de seu conto mais celebrado ? The Story of an Hour ?, problematizar o apagamento da memória de mulheres de narrativas históricas, a fim de fomentar discussões acerca dos estudos feministas. O trabalho posiciona, dessa forma, o próprio fazer tradutório e científico a que se propõe, enquanto construção e prática de diálogos e saberes feministas transnacionais. Com relação aos pressupostos teóricos e metodológicos que sustentam o estudo, destacam-se as reflexões tecidas por Michelle Perrot (2017), no que tange ao apagamento das mulheres na história; e os pressupostos de Olga Castro (2022), ao lado de Silviano Santiago (2019), entre outros, nas discussões e análises que atravessam a tradução e suas dinâmicas envolvendo relações de poder, colonialismo, resistência e feminismos.

Abstract: This dissertation presents the annotated translation of five short stories by the U.S. writer Kate Chopin (1850?1905): The Story of an Hour (1894), An Egyptian Cigarette (1897), Two Portraits (the Nun and the Wanton) (1895), The White Eagle (1900), and Juanita (1894). These texts were originally conceived to be part of the collection A Vocation and a Voice (1991), whose publication was postponed for nearly a century due to censorship imposed on the author in the final years of her life. The five stories selected to form the corpus of this paper were chosen as representative samples of a collection that encompasses nearly all of Chopin?s late literary production. Among the most notable characteristics of these pieces of writing is the way they address themes that resonate with contemporary feminist concerns through their subtexts. In this context, the selected stories feature female protagonists portrayed from a subjective and humanized perspective, as they address issues such as resistance to gender roles, Christian manichean moralism, and the abandonment and marginalization of women who refuse to conform to the subjugation imposed on their bodies. Furthermore, this study aims not only to contribute with the first Brazilian Portuguese translation of four of Chopin?s stories and a retranslation of her most celebrated short story ? The Story of an Hour ? but also to examine the historical erasure of women?s memory in the writing of their own biographies, to foster critical reflection in the field of feminist studies. This work thus frames the act of translation and academic inquiry as a contribution to transnational feminist dialogue. Regarding the theoretical and methodological frameworks supporting the study, special emphasis is placed on the reflections of Michelle Perrot (2017), concerning the erasure of women from History, and the frameworks provided by Olga Castro (2022) and Silviano Santiago (2019), among others, in discussions and analyses that comprehend translation and its dynamics involving power relations, colonialism, resistance, and feminism.
