A poética de Hilda Hilst em tradução para o inglês: uma análise de Fluxo-Floema e Letters from a Seducer à luz de Antoine Berman

Abstract

Esta tese apresenta como objetivo principal analisar a tradução de duas obras: Fluxo-Floema (2018) e Letters from a Seducer (2014), de Hilda Hilst, para a língua inglesa. Apresenta, também, como objetivos específicos, fazer um levantamento sobre o espaço de Hilst no sistema literário, na mídia e no mercado editorial brasileiro, assim como as críticas recebidas pelas obras de partida e de chegada. A escolha das obras da autora brasileira como objeto de pesquisa é justificada, sobretudo, pelo crescente interesse dos polissistemas anglófonos na literatura brasileira (Morris; Carvalho, 2018, p. 2). As obras traduzidas tiveram como tradutores, Alexandra Joy Forman e John Keene, respectivamente. Para a metodologia de análise, foi utilizada a proposta de crítica de tradução de Berman em Toward a Translation Criticism: John Donne (2009), dividida em três etapas: I. Pré-análise, II. Pesquisa sobre o tradutor e III. Confrontação e análise da tradução. Foram selecionados trechos traduzidos que trouxeram desafios para os tradutores. De acordo com a análise, foi possível elaborar os seguintes pontos encontrados nas duas obras. Em Fluxo-Floema (2018), as zonas significantes foram compostas, principalmente, pelas figuras de linguagem presentes: justaposição, aliteração e paronomásia. Em Letters from a Seducer (2014), o tradutor precisou manter a atenção pela variedade de signos presentes, a construção de novas palavras e as estruturas idiossincráticas. Nas duas obras, foi possível determinar que os tradutores tiveram como objetivo aproximar as obras para a cultura de chegada, tornando o texto mais familiarizado com a língua inglesa.

Abstract: The main objective of this thesis is to analyze the translation of two works: Fluxo-Floema (2018) and Letters from a Seducer (2014), by Hilda Hilst, into English. It also has the specific objectives of surveying Hilst's place in the literary system, the media and the Brazilian publishing market, as well as the criticism received by the source and target works. The choice of the Brazilian author's works as the object of research is justified, above all, by the growing interest of Anglophone polysystems in Brazilian literature (Morris; Carvalho, 2018, p. 2). The translated works were translated by Alexandra Joy Forman and John Keene, respectively. The analysis methodology used Berman's translation criticism proposal in Toward a Translation Criticism: John Donne (2009), divided into three stages: I. Pre-analysis, II. Research into the translator, and III. Confrontation and analysis of the translation. Translated passages were selected that posed challenges for the translators. According to the analysis, it was possible to draw up the following points found in the two works. In Fluxo-Floema (2018), the significant zones were mainly composed of the figures of speech present: juxtaposition, alliteration, and paronomasia. In Letters from a Seducer (2014), the translator had to pay attention to the variety of signs present, the construction of new words and idiosyncratic structures. In both works, it was possible to determine that the translators aimed to bring the works closer to the target culture, making the text more familiar to the English language.
