Abstract: We present this thesis as a theoretical-empirical study, based on the method of historical-dialectical materialism, which aimed to analyze the conceptions of culture in Brazilian academic production in the field of childhood and early childhood education from 2011 to 2021. We add to the debate the historical-dialectical contributions of a Marxist-Marxian conception of culture. We seek to question culture within the field of childhood based on the contributions and analyses of humanistic Marxism. We hypothesize that the apprehensions and discussions about culture intertwined in studies on childhood and early childhood education are tied to theoretical perspectives that view cultural issues from a hermetic and phenomenal (isolated) perspective, tied to romanticized (allegorized) manifestations of children, and lacking the development of a critical theoretical framework that problematizes the contradictions intertwined with culture in light of its intrinsic relationship with the social totality and the capitalist mode of production. Thus, we present the contributions of a Marxist-Marxian conception of culture based on the activity of work. As a typically human phenomenon, culture is not exclusive to an economic and/or intellectual elite, much less an activity exclusive to educated adults who access sophisticated artistic and intellectual expressions. In this sense, culture belongs to everyone, including children who, like others, reproduce and produce manifestations of and of culture. However, this production and reproduction occurs under conditions, circumstances, and possibilities that depend on their class and social position in capitalist society. Our specific objectives were: to provide a historical overview of culture and childhood and their relationship with early childhood education; to verify which theoretical perspectives and conceptions of culture underpin the research of academic works in the field of childhood in early childhood education published between 2011 and 2021; to identify which themes or objects of study in these works relate to the issue of culture; how the discussion about culture is conducted; What debate exists about the relationships between culture, childhood, and education, and how children are understood in relation to culture? Identify the main epistemologies within theoretical perspectives so as to examine existing advances and limitations that impact and reverberate on the education and development of working-class children, both sons and daughters, in public early childhood education. Analyze the contributions of Marxism and the humanist Marxism of Gramsci, Vygotsky, Thompson, and Williams, based on the category of labor, to broaden the debate on culture and its relationship with childhood and early childhood education. As a result, we affirm the thesis that the studies we analyze highlight predominantly particularist, phenomenological, hermetic, and relativist interpretations of children's daily lives, which fail to problematize the connections that involve culture in the dialectic between the part and the whole, between the singular and the universal, and between the particularity of and in childhood and the totality of social relations and the capitalist mode of production. Research generalizes a kind of aura around children as super protagonists and hyperactive in the production of their own culture, based on apparently harmonious social contexts that are only distinct and unequal in the diversity and differences called cultural. |
