Lettere (1578-1585), de Filippo Sassetti: tradução comentada e anotada para o português

Abstract

Esta tese consiste na tradução comentada para o português das cartas escritas pelo mercador Filippo Sassetti (1540-1588) entre 1578 e 1581, o qual, quando esteve em Lisboa, Madri ou nas Índias, escreveu correspondências que foram enviadas à sua cidade natal, Florença, na península itálica, enquanto agente dos Médici. O trabalho tem início com a apresentação do autor e de suas cartas, realizando breve contexto histórico, para, em seguida, abordar o florentino e sua vida literária e mercantilista, apoiando-se nos estudos de Dei (1995) e Brege (2014; 2020). Destaca-se a importância de se traduzir as cartas de Sassetti devido ao fato de ele ser ainda um autor a ser descoberto, não somente na Itália, mas pelos países por onde passou e registrou o que viu e observou. Entende-se aqui, assim, a crítica como um dos papéis da tradução, que serve para divulgar não somente o cânone, mas a literatura considerada periférica, como o próprio gênero carta é visto. Além disso, outra relevância em se traduzir Sassetti se pauta em tomar conhecimento da temática e dos sujeitos que aparecem nos conteúdos, seja para se conhecer um pouco melhor a estrutura epistolar que se apresentava à época e qual(is) influência(s) determinado escrito teve para a sociedade. Apontam-se reflexões acerca do que representa a literatura de viagem, especialmente durante o período das Grandes Navegações, graças às cartas escritas por Sassetti. Após a apresentação da proposta de tradução de cartas sassettianas que citam o ?Brasil? em seu conteúdo a partir da edição de 1855, editada por Ettore Marcucci, com base na tradução da letra de Berman (2012), além das reflexões de Venuti (2019) e Eco (2014) a respeito dos Estudos da Tradução e o ato de traduzir, são feitos os comentários acerca do projeto tradutório empreendido, destacando-se situações relacionadas a marcadores temporais, como formas de tratamento, questões de léxico e estilístico-sintáticas, paratextos, com destaque para as notas, e outros fatores que estiveram presentes durante o processo de tradução.

Abstract: This thesis aims to do a commented translation of letters written by the merchant Filippo Sassetti (1540-1588) during the period between 1578 and 1581, when he has been to Lisbon, Madrid and India where he wrote correspondences which were sent to his hometown, Florence, in the italic peninsula, when he was a Medici agent. The thesis starts with an introduction of the author and his letters with a brief historical context to then approach the Florentine and his literary and mercantilist life, based on studies done by Dei (1995) and Brege (2014; 2020). The importance of translating Sassetti's letters is highlighted due to the fact that he is still an author to be discovered not only in Italy, but also in the countries where he went and registered what he saw through people?s observation. We understand critics as a role of translation used to disseminate not only the canon, but the literature considered peripheral, as the letter genre itself. In addition, another relevance in translating Sassetti is based on learning about the theme and the subjects that appear in the contents, whether it is to know a little better the epistolary structure that was presented at that time as well as the influence (s) a particular writing had on society. I point out reflections about what travel literature represents, especially during the Great Navigations period, thanks to the letters written by Sassetti. After the presentation of the proposal for the translation of Sassettian letters that cite ?Brazil? in their content from the 1855 edition, edited by Ettore Marcucci, based on the translation of the letter by Berman (2012), in addition to the reflections of Venuti (2019 ) and Eco (2014) regarding Translation Studies and the act of translating, I bring comments about the translation project undertaken, highlighting situations related to temporal markers, such as forms of treatment, lexical and stylistic and syntactical issues, paratexts, and other factors that were seen throughout the translation process.
