"She found the lie with the ounce of truth": uma proposta de tradução com leitura dramática de The Children's hour, de Lillian Hellman

Abstract

Esta tese apresenta uma tradução e leitura dramática da peça The Children?s Hour, da dramaturga estadunidense Lillian Hellman, partindo da uma perspectiva tripartida da tradução, concebida como uma atividade criativa, política e colaborativa. É criativa porque o texto teatral tem como característica distintiva o imediatismo de sua recepção, devendo dialogar com um público no aqui e agora da encenação e, portanto, o tradutor deve empregar estratégias específicas para lidar com esse tipo de texto. É uma atividade política na medida em que tradução e teatro são tidos como capazes de engendrar mudanças sociais, e a escolha das peças a serem traduzidas ? quando essa escolha cabe ao tradutor ?, bem como a forma de abordá-las, reflete a ideologia de quem as traduz. É colaborativa porque parte da premissa de que os tradutores de teatro idealmente devem ser capacitados como dramaturgistas, de modo a estarem envolvidos em todas as etapas que levam o texto da página para o palco. A tradução empreendida nesta tese foi colocada à prova em uma leitura dramática, realizada de forma virtual com estudantes de Artes Cênicas, de modo a testar a exequibilidade do texto e aprimorá-lo para uma futura encenação.

Abstract: This work presents a translation and dramatic reading of the play ?The Children's Hour?, by the American playwright Lillian Hellman, from a three-way perspective of translation, understood as a creative, political, and collaborative activity. It is creative because the theatrical text has as its distinguishing feature the immediacy of its reception; it must speak to an audience in the here and now of performance and, therefore, the translator must employ specific strategies to deal with this type of text. It is a political activity insofar as translation and theater are regarded as capable of effecting social change, and the choice of the plays to be translated ? when this choice is up to the translator ?, as well as the way to handle them, reflects the ideology of who translates. It is collaborative because it is based on the premise that theater translators should ideally be trained as dramaturges, in order to be involved in all the steps that take the text from page to stage. The translation undertaken in this work was put to the test in a dramatic reading, carried out in virtual format with Performing Arts undergraduate students, in order to test the fluidity of the text and improve it for a future staging.
