Owing to the positive effect of carotenoids on parameters of visual, nutritional and sensory quality of the tomato fruit, several studies have been dedicated to exploring these compounds. The characterization of mutations that affect carotenogenesis and light signaling demonstrate that individually some alleles positively alter the profile and accumulation of carotenoids in the fruit. To explore the impact of these combined alleles on tomato quality parameters, we generated two lines combining alleles that affect carotenogenesis (Beta carotene (B) and tangerine (t)) with light signaling (high pigment 2 (hp2)). The orange color of the fruits of the B/hp2 and t/hp2 lines suggests the predominant accumulation of beta carotene and tetra-cislycopene respectively, carotenoids that are considered more bioactive. The allelic combinations in the double mutants resulted in a higher content of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) compared to parental B and t, while the content of soluble solids was not significantly changed. The profile of volatile organic compounds of the double mutants showed a significant change as compared to parental lines, with emphasis on the increase of b-ionone and (E) -2-Hexenal in B/hp2 and geranyl acetone in t/hp2. Although the number of fruits was reduced in the double mutants, productivity was not affected, due to the greater average fruit size. Collectively, these results indicate that the double mutant lines generated intensified the nutritional value of the tomato without yield penalty. In addition, they alter flavor components that may benefit the consumer's interest.
