Literatura surda: o processo de tradução e a transcrição em signwriting

Abstract

Esta pesquisa tem como título ?Literatura surda: o processo de tradução e a transcrição em SignWriting?, na qual, entender e compreender o processo da produção representa um grande desafio. As investigações partem do levantamento dos livros de literatura surda infantojuvenil brasileira, que apresentam o sistema de escrita de sinais e analisa questionários dos tradutores/transcritores sobre a atuação deles. Este trabalho tem como base teórica principal os pesquisadores no campo da Literatura surda e no sistema de escrita de sinais, são eles respectivamente: Valerie Sutton (1974) e Lodenir Becker Karnopp (2008). A escolha da primeira teórica, foi pelo fato de ter sido pioneira na criação de um sistema de escrita de sinais, língua apresentada na modalidade espaço visual, em que se transfere os parâmetros das línguas de sinais (configuração de mãos, movimentos, expressão facial e corporal) na sua produção escrita; e Karnopp por identificar os primeiros livros da literatura surda infantojuvenil que possuíam produção para escrita de sinais. Para tanto, vinte e um livros de literatura surda infantojuvenil brasileira apresentados na forma de tradução ou transcrição e que foram analisados neste estudo. Além disso, foram entrevistados onze participantes brasileiros, que contribuíram, de alguma forma, com a produção desses livros e, assim, compartilharam suas experiências no ato de traduzir ou transcrever para escrita de sinais. Concluímos que os livros de literatura infantojuvenil com SignWriting são quase todos bilíngues (apresentando textos em Português e Libras) e a produção de SignWriting nos textos usa processos de tradução e transcrição, num contexto de diversas modalidades da Língua Portuguesa e Libras, junto com imagens. As pessoas que produzem o SignWriting nos livros não necessariamente se vêem como tradutores ou transcritores. Eles têm objetivos principalmente didáticos na produção e muitas vezes trabalham em grupos, contudo precisam do apoio de revisores.

Abstract: This research investigates the process of translation and SignWriting transcription in deaf literature, aiming to understand the production process. The research is based on a review of existing books of children?s Deaf Literature which use the SignWriting System, and analyses responses by the translators/transcribers about their work. This dissertation takes as its principal theoretical base, research on SignWriting and deaf literature in Brazil, referring respectively to work by Valerie Sutton (1974), and Lodenir Becker Karnopp (2008). The choice of the former is because Sutton pioneered the sign writing system, in which the information of a language presented in a visual spatial modality is transferred to the written parameters of handshape, movement and facial expression; the latter choice is because Karnopp identified the first book of children?s deaf literature produced in SignWriting. Twenty-one books of children?s Deaf Literature which use SignWriting as part of translation or transcription are analyzed. Eleven Brazilian participants who contributed in some way to the production these books were interviewed, and shared their experience on the act of translating or transcribing the works into SignWriting. We find that the books of children's Deaf Literature using SignWriting are almost all bilingual texts (presented in Portuguese and Libras), and that the use of SignWriting in the texts draws on processes of translation and transcription, in the context of the varied modalities in which Portuguese and Libras may be produced, used with illustrations. The people who create the books do not necessarily view themselves as translators, but produce SignWriting principally for didactic or educational reasons, and often work in groups with others, although they need support from additional reviewers to check their work.
