Tradução comentada da obra The Awful Rowing Toward God de Anne Sexton

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo realizar a tradução comentada do livro The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975), escrito pela poeta Anne Sexton, como O Terrível Remar Rumo A Deus. Tendo em vista o ato da tradução como leitura, no primeiro capítulo aborda-se sua biografia brevemente e o contexto literário em que se inscrevia, assim como a discussão de Adrienne Rich, para situar sua obra em meio ao debate feminista. Em seguida, faz-se uma análise do livro a partir dos estudos literários voltados à espiritualidade e aspecto psicanalítico de The Awful Rowing Toward God, contando também com a perspectiva de Gaston Bachelard, para auxiliar em sua interpretação. Por fim, conta-se com uma narração dos poemas do livro, uma vez que não será possível disponibilizar os poemas na íntegra devido aos direitos autorais. No capítulo sobre as Teorias da Tradução, a primeira seção se dedica à sua contribuição à tradução da poesia, analisando quais são seus critérios de base para leitura e prática tradutória, com alguns comentários sobre sua ética e inventividade, a partir de Ana Cristina Cesar, Paulo Henriques Britto, Álvaro Faleiros, Paulo Oliveira, Antoine Berman e Haroldo de Campos. A segunda seção se volta à concepção da tradução sob a consciência feminista, buscando conciliações com as necessidades da tradução poética, com base nos trabalhos de Olga Castro, James Underhill e Mona Baker. O capítulo anterior à tradução em si discute os tipos de verso livre em inglês conforme Paulo Henriques Britto, Derek Attridge e Philip Hobsbaum para elaborar critérios gerais sobre a poética The Awful Rowing Toward God, contando com o arcabouço teórico dos capítulos anteriores, para realizar os comentários de sua tradução.

Abstract : My dissertation aims to accomplish the commented translation of the book The Awful Rowing Toward God (1975), written by the poet Anne Sexton, as O Terrível Remar Rumo A Deus. Taking into account the act of translation as an act of reading, the first chapter briefly addresses her biography and the context in which she wrote, as well as Adrienne Rich's discussion, so as to locate Sextons s work within feminist debates. Following, The Awful Rowing Toward God is analyzed throught the perspective of literary studies, focussing mainly on the spiritual and psychoanalitical stances. Gaston Bachelard's perspective is also going to be taken into account to auxiliate its interpretation. At last, a narration of the book's poems is established, since it is not possible to provide the poems in full due to copyrights. In the chapter on Translation Theories, the first section is dedicated to its contribution to poetry translation, analyzing which are its basic criteria for reading and translation practice, with a few comments about its ethics and inventiveness, based on the writings of Ana Cristina Cesar, Paulo Henriques Britto, Álvaro Faleiros, Paulo Oliveira, Antoine Berman, and Haroldo de Campos. The second section is dedicated to the concept of translation under a feminist consciousness, seeking conciliation with the needs of poetry translation, based on the works of Olga Castro, James Underhill, and Mona Baker. The last chapter discusses the types of free verse in English according to Paulo Henriques Britto, Derek Attridge, and Philip Hobsbaum so as to elaborate the general criteria about The Awful Rowing Toward God's poetics, considering the theoretical framework of the previous chapters, and present the comments of its translation.
