Author: Gomes, Rafael Mello
Abstract: According to the latest Indicador Criança Alfabetizada report (INEP, 2025), the state of Santa Catarina recorded 63% of students as literate in public schools, a rate below the target established for the year 2025 (67%). Considering this context, the present study sought to analyze whether there is a relationship between two central pillars in the literacy process, namely phonological awareness (PA) and the writing of words composed of non-canonical (complex) syllables. To this end, standardized instruments of phonological awareness, reading, and writing were used in order to investigate the existence or absence of relationships between PA skills and word writing. The instruments employed were: the Prova de Consciência Fonológica por Produção Oral (PCFO) [Phonological Awareness Test by Oral Production] (Seabra; Capovilla, 2012), the Teste de Competência de Leitura de Palavras e Pseudopalavras (TCLPP) [Word and Pseudoword Reading Competence Test] (Seabra; Capovilla, 2023), and the Prova de Escrita sob Ditado ? versão reduzida (PED-vr) [Spelling-to-Dictation Test ? reduced version] (Seabra; Capovilla, 2013). In addition to the general objective, the study also aimed to analyze the relationships between reading, writing, and PA skills, as well as to categorize the deviations produced by the children in light of the writing hypotheses proposed by Emília Ferreiro and Ana Teberosky (1985). The study included 19 students ? 8 from the second grade and 11 from the third grade ? from a state public school located in the municipality of Biguaçu. The results suggest a significant negative correlation between PA skills and errors made in word writing (? = -0.7856; p = 0.000067), indicating that the higher the scores in PA skills, the fewer deviations the children produced in their writing. Furthermore, the results indicated a significant positive correlation between word and pseudoword reading and PA skills (? = 0.7486; p = 0.0002269); a significant negative correlation between word and pseudoword reading and errors made in word and pseudoword writing (? = -0.877; p = 0.00000083); a significant negative correlation between phonemic awareness skills and syllabic structure errors (? = -0.6950685; p = 0.0009554); and significant negative correlations between PA skills and the writing of words with regular, context-dependent regular, and irregular correspondences. In the descriptive analysis of the deviations produced, different writing strategies were also observed among students at the alphabetic, syllabic-alphabetic, syllabic, and pre-syllabic levels.
