The curious semantics of qualquer in brazilian portuguese

Abstract

Esta dissertação apresenta um mapeamento sistemático da distribuição e do comportamento interpretativo de qualquer no português brasileiro e examina sua posição no sistema translinguístico das expressões de free choice. Em primeiro lugar, revisita e sistematiza as contribuições da literatura sobre qualquer, organizando os resultados em tabelas empíricas de sua distribuição em diferentes contextos, incluindo sentenças genéricas, contextos modais, imperativos, condicionais, negação e predicados episódicos. Foram consideradas também as seguintes estruturas: qualquer N, um N qualquer, e as construções com plural e numerais envolvendo quaisquer. Em segundo lugar, a dissertação reconstrói a trajetória teórica que conduz ao modelo baseado em alternativas proposto por Chierchia (2013), acompanhando o desenvolvimento desde o tratamento dos indefinidos como variáveis em Heim (1982), passando pela tradição baseada em polaridade, pela proposta de Kadmon e Landman (1993) e pelas análises de Dayal (1998, 2012), além de examinar diagnósticos translinguísticos provenientes do inglês, do espanhol e do italiano. Em terceiro lugar, aplica a proposta de Chierchia (2013) aos dados do português brasileiro ? com foco em qualquer N como item de free choice ?, com o objetivo de determinar quais aspectos do comportamento de qualquer podem ser formalmente derivados e quais permanecem resistentes à formulação atual de sua teoria. Os resultados mostram que o modelo explica uma parte significativa do comportamento observado de qualquer, ao mesmo tempo em que identifica usos que permanecem fora do alcance explicativo da teoria. A dissertação contribui, assim, ao oferecer um mapeamento sistemático do comportamento de qualquer no português brasileiro, uma reconstrução linear da literatura teórica sobre essa classe de itens e um diagnóstico dos casos em que qualquer ainda permanece sem explicação adequada nas análises atuais.

Abstract: This dissertation provides a systematic mapping of the distribution and interpretive behaviour of qualquer in Brazilian Portuguese and examines its place within the crosslinguistic system of Free Choice expressions. First, it revisits and systematises the contributions of the literature on qualquer, organising results into structured empirical tables of its distribution across contexts, including generic statements, modal contexts, imperatives, conditionals, negation, and episodic predicates. The following structures were also considered: qualquer N, um N qualquer, and constructions involving plurals and numerals with quaisquer. Second, the dissertation reconstructs the theoretical trajectory leading to Chierchia?s (2013) alternative-based framework, tracing the development from Heim?s (1982) treatment of indefinites as variables through the polarity-based tradition, Kadmon and Landman?s (1993) account, and Dayal?s (1998, 2012) proposals, while also examining crosslinguistic diagnostics from English, Spanish, and Italian. Third, it applies Chierchia's (2013) framework to the Brazilian Portuguese data ? with a focus on qualquer N as a free choice item ?, in order to determine which aspects of the behaviour of qualquer can be formally derived and which remain resistant to the current formulation of the theory. The results show that the framework successfully accounts for a significant part of the observed behaviour of qualquer, while also identifying uses that remain outside the explanatory reach of the current theory. The dissertation thus contributes to the literature on Free Choice expressions by offering a systematic mapping of the behaviour of Brazilian Portuguese qualquer, a structured reconstruction of the theoretical literature on this class of items, and a diagnosis of the empirical patterns that remain outside the explanatory reach of the current theory.
