Codas: inter-relações linguísticas

Abstract

A presente pesquisa dá continuidade aos estudos desenvolvidos no mestrado sobre os perfis linguísticos de Codas, ampliando as análises acerca das experiências linguísticas de sujeitos bilíngues bimodais que usam a Libras e a língua portuguesa. Considerando que os Codas vivenciam, desde a infância, contextos de interação marcados pela coexistência de duas línguas e duas culturas, este estudo tem como objetivo analisar as relações linguísticas que esses sujeitos constroem com a Libras e o português, observando aspectos relacionados às atitudes sociais, ao conforto linguístico, ao domínio e ao uso de cada língua em diferentes contextos sociais e comunicativos. A pesquisa fundamenta-se nos estudos sobre bilinguismo bimodal, língua de herança, políticas linguísticas e identidade linguística, compreendendo a experiência dos Codas como atravessada por dinâmicas sociais, culturais e linguísticas específicas. Trata-se de uma investigação de abordagem qualitativa com aspectos quantitativos, de caráter descritivo e exploratório, realizada por meio da técnica de grupo focal. Participam do estudo os mesmos sujeitos que integraram a pesquisa sobre Sobreposição Bilíngue Bimodal, possibilitando aprofundar discussões anteriormente iniciadas e compreender as percepções, experiências e significados atribuídos pelos participantes às suas trajetórias linguísticas. Os dados foram analisados por meio da categorização temática dos enunciados produzidos durante os encontros, utilizando o software Taguette como ferramenta de organização e análise qualitativa. Os resultados evidenciam que as relações estabelecidas pelos Codas com a Libras e o português são influenciadas por fatores sociais, familiares, educacionais e institucionais, produzindo diferentes níveis de conforto, domínio e uso das línguas. Os dados indicam que, embora a Libras ocupa um papel central na constituição identitária e nas relações familiares desses sujeitos, sua circulação ainda encontra limitações em diversos espaços sociais, refletindo desigualdades históricas entre as línguas. Em contrapartida, a língua portuguesa, embora amplie o acesso a contextos formais e institucionais, também pode representar tensões decorrentes de expectativas normativas e perspectivas monolíngues que invisibilizam as especificidades do bilinguismo bimodal. Os achados reforçam a necessidade de ampliar as discussões sobre políticas linguísticas e educação bilíngue no Brasil, considerando não apenas as demandas da comunidade surda, mas também as experiências de crianças e adultos bilíngues bimodais. Além disso, a pesquisa contribui para o fortalecimento dos estudos sobre bilinguismo bimodal ao evidenciar a importância de práticas educacionais e institucionais que reconheçam a diversidade linguística, cultural e identitária dos Codas, promovendo maior visibilidade e reconhecimento social a esses sujeitos.

Abstract: This study builds upon research conducted during a master's degree on the linguistic profiles of Codas, expanding the analysis of the linguistic experiences of bimodal bilingual individuals who use Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese. Considering that Codas experience contexts of interaction characterized by the coexistence of two languages and two cultures from early childhood, this study aims to analyze the linguistic relationships these individuals establish with Libras and Portuguese, focusing on aspects related to social attitudes, linguistic comfort, proficiency, and language use across different social and communicative contexts. The study is grounded in research on bimodal bilingualism, heritage language, language policies, and linguistic identity, understanding the experiences of Codas as shaped by specific social, cultural, and linguistic dynamics. This investigation adopts a qualitative approach with quantitative elements and has a descriptive and exploratory nature. Data were collected through focus group discussions. The participants are the same individuals who took part in the previous study on Bimodal Bilingual Overlap, allowing for a deeper examination of issues previously identified and a better understanding of the perceptions, experiences, and meanings participants attribute to their linguistic trajectories. Data were analyzed through thematic categorization of the statements produced during the focus group sessions, using the Taguette software as a tool for qualitative data organization and analysis. The findings indicate that the relationships Codas establish with Libras and Portuguese are influenced by social, familial, educational, and institutional factors, resulting in varying levels of linguistic comfort, proficiency, and language use. The data suggest that, although Libras occupies a central role in the construction of participants' identities and family relationships, its circulation remains limited in many social spaces, reflecting historical inequalities between languages. In contrast, Portuguese, while providing broader access to formal and institutional contexts, may also represent a source of tension due to normative expectations and monolingual perspectives that render the specificities of bimodal bilingualism invisible.The findings reinforce the need to expand discussions on language policies and bilingual education in Brazil, taking into account not only the demands of the Deaf community but also the experiences of bimodal bilingual children and adults. Furthermore, this study contributes to the advancement of research on bimodal bilingualism by highlighting the importance of educational and institutional practices that recognize the linguistic, cultural, and identity-related diversity of Codas, thereby promoting greater visibility and social recognition for this population.
