Abstract: This research investigates the syntax of written Portuguese throughout the 18th century, focusing on manuscripts produced in the formative region of the Captaincy of Santa Catarina, specifically in texts written by Portuguese individuals and one Brazilian in the regions of Laguna and Ilha de Santa Catarina. The main objective of this work is to analyze fronting in order to understand the organization of the left periphery, systematically contrasting the texts produced by the Brazilian-born writer with those written by Portuguese-born authors who were active in the region during the delimited historical period. Grounded in the theoretical framework of generative syntax, the study examines a corpus of historical manuscripts. The analysis focuses on the variation/competition among different contexts driven by syntactic word order patterns (SVO, V1, V2, and V>2), which reflect different strategies in the left periphery?such as free displacement and topicalization?with parallel attention to other phenomena that have diachronically been lost in the Portuguese Language. The results evidence a heterogeneous syntactic framework, characterized by what the theoretical model of Competing Grammars?a hypothesis central to this foundation?understands as the coexistence of different grammars within the same synchronic and spatial scope. Through this hypothesis, it was found that the authors of Portuguese origin maintain the use of conservative strategies in constituent displacement, albeit with a low occurrence of subject inversion, coupled with the use of resumptive clitic copies in topicalization contexts, clitic clustering, and frequent interpolations between clitic and verb. In contrast, the Brazilian writer exhibited syntactic innovations that indicate the emergence of a topicprominent grammar, characterized by the use of fronted constituents without prepositions or clitic resumption, and by a significantly higher frequency of the SV order. I conclude, however, that controlling for the authors' nativeness serves as a decisive methodological criterion, revealing that the 18th-century data from Santa Catarina can attest to the ongoing syntactic change and the emergence of grammatical traits defining what would become contemporary Brazilian Portuguese.
