Colin Murphy's #Antigone: audio drama and the contemporaneity of greek tragedy

Abstract

Esta dissertação examina o mito de Antígona e a contemporaneidade da tragédia grega em #ANTIGONE, de Colin Murphy, peça radiofônica transmitida pela primeira vez em 2023 na Newstalk, uma estação de rádio irlandesa. A investigação baseia-se em estudos críticos da Antígona de Sófocles e da tragédia grega, na história das adaptações irlandesas da peça, em teorias recentes acerca da adaptação de clássicos da Antiguidade a contextos contemporâneos, no teatro radiofônico e nas consequências políticas e culturais da pandemia de COVID-19. A análise histórica, contextual, formal e semântica desenvolvida neste estudo demonstra que #ANTIGONE, de Murphy, revitaliza a tragédia grega e a torna contemporânea e instigante ao reconfigurar experimentalmente o mito de Antígona na linguagem própria da política e dos meios de comunicação atuais. Ao fazer isso, a peça transforma uma narrativa clássica em uma reflexão impactante sobre os desafios impostos pela pandemia de COVID-19 e pela atual crise de refugiados no Ocidente. Por um lado, a Antígona de Murphy personifica refugiados que atualmente são tratados como cidadãos de segunda classe sob governos autoritários; por outro lado, sua representação de Creonte faz o mesmo por políticos que buscam expandir seu poder às custas dos mais vulneráveis. Ao ?ressuscitar? Antígona e Creonte na Irlanda em tempos de pandemia, Murphy tanto estabelece uma ponte entre o antigo e o contemporâneo quanto reafirma a vitalidade duradoura da tragédia grega como um marco para a abordagem de novas crises. Além disso, este estudo sustenta que a escolha de Murphy pelo teatro radiofônico contribui para tornar a tragédia grega atual e envolvente, uma vez que o formato de notícias urgentes de #ANTIGONE intensifica a sensação de imediatismo e espontaneidade da peça, produzindo ressonâncias culturais potentes à medida que os ouvintes constroem ativamente o drama em suas mentes por meio de paisagens sonoras.

Abstract: This dissertation examines the myth of Antigone and the contemporaneity of Greek tragedy in Colin Murphy's #ANTIGONE, a radio play first broadcast in 2023 on Newstalk, an Irish radio station. The investigation is grounded in critical works on Sophocles? Antigone and Greek tragedy, on the history of Irish adaptations of the play, on recent theories on the adaptation of ancient classics to contemporary contexts, on audio drama, and on the political and cultural consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The historical, contextual, formal, and semantic analysis developed in this study demonstrates that Murphy?s #ANTIGONE revitalizes Greek tragedy and renders it contemporary and compelling by experimentally reconfiguring the Antigone myth within the language of present-day politics and media. In doing so, the play transforms a classical narrative into a resonant reflection on the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and on the ongoing refugee crisis in the West. On the one hand, Murphy?s Antigone embodies refugees who are currently treated as second-class citizens under authoritarian governments; on the other, Murphy?s Críon does the same for politicians who seek to expand their power at the expense of society?s most vulnerable people. By ?resurrecting? Antigone and Creon in pandemic Ireland, Murphy both bridges the gap between the ancient and the contemporary and reaffirms the enduring vitality of Greek tragedy as a framework for addressing new crises. Furthermore, this study contends that Murphy?s choice for audio drama contributes to making Greek tragedy feel and sound contemporary and compelling, as the breaking-news format of #ANTIGONE heightens a sense of both immediacy and spontaneity, generating powerful cultural resonances as listeners actively construct the drama in their minds from soundscapes.
