Postdictatorial torsos: the excavation of memories in Encontrando a Víctor (2005) and Fico te devendo uma carta sobre o Brasil (2019)

Abstract

Este estudo visa analisar o uso do arquivo fotográfico nas narrativas documentais cinematográficas na geração pós-ditadura tendo como base a noção de pós-memória. Para isso, os documentários escolhidos para este trabalho são os seguintes: Encontrando a Victor (Natalia Bruschtein, 2005) e Fico Te Devendo Uma Carta Sobre o Brasil (Carol Benjamin, 2019). O principal objetivo é investigar como esses documentários incorporam as fotografias para endereçar histórias privadas no âmbito público. A escolha por esses filmes está relacionada a dois principais fatores: primeiro, ambos os filmes são dirigidos por mulheres latino-americanas filhas de pais que tiveram suas vidas diretamente afetadas pela ditadura militar; e segundo, pertencem a linhagem de documentários pós anos 2000, onde houve um crescimento transversal no cinema latino-americano por histórias verídicas sobre os regimes ditatoriais. Além disso, a pesquisa procura abranger o contexto histórico-político da Argentina e do Brasil nos períodos ditatoriais assim como trabalhos relevantes nos estudos de fotografia e pós-memória. Conduzo esta investigação a partir de autores como Walter Benjamin, Ana Maria Mauad, Anita Leandro, Arlette Farge, Elizabeth Jelin, Georges Didi-Huberman, Jeanne-Marie Gagnebin, John Berger, Marianne Hirsch, Mauricio Lissovsky, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, entre outros. A pesquisa sugere que esses filmes transcendem a simples descrição de eventos ou reflexões nostálgicas sobre lembranças fotográficas. Eles penetram profundamente nas camadas íntimas e intergeracionais da ressonância emocional, criando uma nova gênese e retornando para instaurar um espaço que desafia e redefine os limites entre o pessoal e o político.

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the use of photographic archives in documentary film narratives in the post-dictatorship generation, based on the notion of postmemory. The documentaries selected for this work are Finding Victor (Natalia Bruschtein, 2005) and I Owe You a Letter About Brazil (Carol Benjamin, 2019). The main objective is to investigate how these documentaries incorporate photographs to address private stories within the public sphere. The choice of these films is related to two main factors: first, both are directed by Latin American women whose fathers? lives were directly affected by military dictatorship; and second, they belong to a lineage of documentaries produced after the 2000s, a period that saw a transversal rise in Latin American cinema dealing with real stories about dictatorial regimes. In addition, the research seeks to encompass the historical-political context of Argentina and Brazil during their respective dictatorships, as well as relevant works in photography and postmemory studies. I conduct this investigation drawing from authors such as Walter Benjamin, Ana Maria Mauad, Anita Leandro, Arlette Farge, Elizabeth Jelin, Georges Didi-Huberman, Jeanne-Marie Gagnebin, John Berger, Marianne Hirsch, Mauricio Lissovsky, Roland Barthes, Susan Sontag, among others. The research suggests that these films transcend the mere description of events or nostalgic reflections on photographic mementos. They delve deeply into the intimate, intergenerational layers of emotional resonance, crafting a new genesis and returning to establish a space that challenges and redefines the boundaries between the personal and the political.
