The blank canvas of despair: emptiness, absurdity, and horror in Samuel Beckett?s Waiting for Godot

Abstract

Esta dissertação propõe uma reinterpretação de Esperando Godot (1954) de Samuel Beckett, buscando ir além de sua leitura associada ao Teatro do Absurdo, como desenvolvida por Martin Esslin (1961), a fim de analisá-la como uma obra de horror existencial. Integrando os conceitos do ?branco? de Le Breton (2018) e o horror metaphysicus de Kolakowski (1988), este estudo examina a peça irlandesa como uma exploração da dissolução identitária e de uma realidade indiferente. A análise foca na encenação minimalista e narrativa cíclica apresentada por Beckett. Este estudo desafia leituras tradicionais do Teatro do Absurdo ao incorporar perspectivas contemporâneas como as de Bennett (2011), McMullan (2021) e Cohn (1967). Ao apresentar a metáfora de theatrum mundi, esta dissertação traz à luz a cumplicidade do leitor/espectador com os personagens da obra de Beckett. Conclui-se que Esperando Godot transcende o absurdo ao encenar um horror arraigado na fragilidade humana, em que a espera reflete a condição existencial: incerteza, abandono e apagamento progressivo do eu.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes a reinterpretation of Samuel Beckett?s Waiting for Godot (1954), seeking to go beyond its reading associated with the Theatre of the Absurd as developed by Martin Esslin (1961), in order to analyse it as a work of existential horror. Integrating Le Breton?s (2018) concepts of the blank and Kolakowski?s (1988) horror metaphysicus, this study examines the Irish play as an exploration of identity dissolution and an indifferent reality. The analysis focuses on Beckett?s minimalist staging and cyclical narrative. This study challenges traditional readings of the Theatre of the Absurd by incorporating contemporary perspectives such as Bennett?s (2011), McMullan?s (2021) and Cohn?s (1967). By presenting the metaphor of theatrum mundi, this dissertation brings to light the complicity of the reader /spectator with the characters in Beckett?s work. It concludes that Waiting for Godot transcends the absurd by staging a horror rooted in human fragility, in which waiting reflects the existential condition: uncertainty, abandonment and the progressive erasure of oneself.
