"What's a faggot?": images of violence in contemporary queer cinema

Abstract

O presente trabalho investiga a representação e construção de violência antiqueer em seis filmes contemporâneos: Praia do Futuro, Carol, Moonlight, Una Mujer Fantástica, Yo, Imposible, e The Power of The Dog. O objetivo da pesquisa é identificar como estes filmes mantêm ou subvertem suposições relacionadas à representação de violência anti-queer na tela. O referencial teórico envolve a exploração da natureza multidimensional da violência, variando de violência verbal, emocional e física, bem como baseada em gênero, classe, raça e sexualidade. Além disso, a pesquisa explora os ciclos de produção do cinema queer no mundo, na tentativa de traçar um panorama simplificado de como a violência anti-queer é reproduzida e mantida na tela. A pesquisa demonstra como o cinema queer tem avançado em seu tratamento da violência antiqueer, indo além de retratos simplistas para oferecer narrativas mais críticas e complexas. Por conta disso, o cinema queer tem contribuído para uma conversa cultural mais ampla a respeito de violência, identidade e resistência.

Abstract: The present study examines the representation and construction of anti-queer violence in six contemporary queer films: Praia do Futuro, Carol, Moonlight, Una Mujer Fantástica, Yo, Imposible, and The Power of the Dog. The primary objective is to analyze how these films either reinforce or subvert prevailing assumptions surrounding the depiction of anti-queer violence on screen. The theoretical framework draws on the multidimensional nature of violence ? including verbal, emotional, and physical forms ? as well as violence shaped by gender, class, race, and sexuality. Additionally, the study engages with the production cycles of queer cinema globally, aiming to provide a simplified overview of how anti-queer violence is reproduced and sustained in film. The findings suggest that queer cinema has evolved in its portrayal of anti-queer violence, shifting from reductive representations toward more nuanced and critical narratives. In doing so, queer cinema has contributed to a broader cultural discourse on violence, identity, and resistance.
