The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing: genesis, canon, and field

Abstract

Em 1991, a Field Day Theatre Company publicou a Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing, editada por Seamus Deane com um amplo grupo de editores contribuindo para as várias seções do trabalho. A antologia era aguardada com antecipação por várias razões, como o papel da Field Day como força estimuladora no debate cultural irlandês, o tamanho da antologia, e o ambicioso projeto de construir uma antologia nacional no fim do século XX em uma ilha dividida por tensões culturais e políticas, especialmente contra o pano de fundo dos Troubles na Irlanda do Norte. Considerando esse clima polarizado, não foi surpresa que a antologia tenha causado divergências quanto à sua abordagem com relação a conceitos como ?escrita irlandesa? e identidade irlandesa. A Field Day Anthology foi criticada principalmente pela gritante omissão da escrita de mulheres e do feminismo. Em resposta, a Field Day, junto a uma equipe de oito acadêmicas feministas, produziu a Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing volumes IV and V: Irish Women?s Writing and Traditions. Esta tese, então, busca analisar os cinco volumes da Field Day Anthology tendo a edição como foco. Baseando-se nos estudos da edição e em modelos de literatura que levam em conta outros agentes para além de autor e leitor, ela examina as inclusões, exclusões, discussões críticas e paratextos nos dois grupos de volumes para analisar as versões do cânone que criam e suas repercussões para o que se considera como ?escrita irlandesa?. Explorando os volumes IV e V como um projeto editorial abertamente feminista, a tese também investiga como um projeto editorial explicitamente feminista de uma antologia nacional funciona no século XXI.

Abstract: In 1991, the Field Day Theatre Company published the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing, edited by Seamus Deane with the contribution of a wide cast of supporting editors. The anthology had been much anticipated on several grounds, such as the role of Field Day in stimulating Irish cultural debate, the scale of the anthology and the ambitious project of constructing a national anthology in the late 20th century in an island riven by political and cultural tensions, especially against the backdrop of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Given this polarised climate, it was no surprise that the anthology raised dissent in its approach to concepts such as ?Irish writing? and Irish identity. Simultaneously, the anthology coincided with an increasingly questioning stance toward the making of literary canons and a heightened awareness of the implications of inclusions and exclusions within anthologies. The anthology was especially criticised for the glaring omission of women?s writing and feminism. To address this, Field Day, under a team of eight feminist scholars, produced The Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing volumes IV and V: Irish Women?s Writing and Traditions. This dissertation, thus, aims to analyse the five volumes of the Field Day Anthology taking their editing as its focus. Drawing on editing studies and models of literature that take into account agents other than author and reader, it looks at both sets? inclusions, exclusions, critical discussion and paratexts to analyse the versions of the canon they create and its repercussions for what is considered ?Irish writing?. Attention is also given to the anthology?s reception and how the anthology relates to the literary field in which it is inserted. In its exploration of volumes IV and V as an overtly feminist editorial project, the dissertation also investigates how an explicitly feminist editorial project for a national anthology works in the 21st century.
