Retraduções de variedades linguísticas da literatura de língua inglesa: o polissistema brasileiro em transformação

Abstract

Em 1994, John Milton investigou a tradução de novelas da língua inglesa consideradas clássicas no Brasil, pesquisa que foi incluída em sua obra O Clube do Livro e a Tradução (2002). O autor concluiu que no país, a representação literária de variedades linguísticas estrangeiras tende a não ser traduzida. Esta pesquisa examina retraduções publicadas entre 2002 e 2015 do corpus da investigação de Milton em busca de pistas que apontem para uma possível transformação em relação à tal prática. São novas traduções de The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1984) [1884], de Mark Twain, e de Wuthering Heights (1966) [1847], de Emily Brontë. Adicionalmente, identifico as estratégias e procedimentos adotados pelos tradutores nas obras que consideram a variedade linguística, segundo a classificação proposta por Rosa (2012), e busco as fontes linguísticas do português brasileiro para estas traduções. O presente estudo identificou nestas retraduções o procedimento de Manutenção, através do qual marcadores linguísticos dos textos-fonte sinalizando representação de discurso sub-padrão são recriados. Também encontrou indícios de que elementos do Vernáculo Geral Brasileiro e de variedades sub-padrão do português ganharam espaço no polissistema deste país em se tratando de literatura traduzida entre 2002 e 2015.<br>

Abstract : In 1994, John Milton examined the translation of English language novels that are considered classics in Brazil. In his analysis, which was included in his book O Clube do Livro e a Tradução (2002), the author concluded that, in Brazil, the literary representation of foreign linguistic varieties tends not to be translated. My research examines retranslations published between 2002 and 2015 of the corpus assessed by Milton in search of clues that could point to a possible shift relating to this practice. The works assessed in the study include new translations of Mark Twain?s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1984) [1884] and Emily Brontë?s Wuthering Heights (1966) [1847]. Additionally, I identify the strategies and procedures adopted by the translators in the target texts that consider linguistic variety according to the classification proposed by Rosa (2012), and search for the linguistic sources within Brazilian Portuguese for these retranslations. In them, my study identifies the practice of Maintenance, through which linguistic markers in source texts signaling the representation of sub-standard speech are recreated in the translation. I also found evidence that elements of the Brazilian General Vernacular and varieties of sub-standard Brazilian Portuguese have gained ground in the Brazilian polysystem of translated literature between 2002 and 2015.
