Title: O acusativo anafórico em cartas comerciais do Amazonas no século XIX (1879 a 1899)
Abstract: This dissertation aimed to describe and analyze the anaphoric accusative (ACC) in nineteenth-century Amazonian writing, through the investigation of a corpus of commercial letters addressed to the company J. G. Araújo, between 1879 and 1899, with the purpose of contributing to the grammatical knowledge of written Portuguese in Brazil. The specific objectives of this research were: (i) to identify the forms of expression of anaphoric ACC in Amazonian writing at the end of the 19th century, in order to define the most frequently used strategy of this phenomenon in written Portuguese in Amazonas during that period; (ii) to investigate the syntactic-semantic contexts of the anaphoric ACC, with the purpose of verifying a case of competition between Brazilian Portuguese (BP) grammar and European Portuguese (EP) grammar; (iii) to contribute to the understanding of the process of change related to the loss of accusative clitics and the implementation of the null object in written Portuguese in Amazonas at the end of the 19th century; and (iv) to collaborate with the project Para a História do Português do Brasil (PHPB), through the transcription of nineteenth-century historical materials. As theoretical basis, the proposal advanced by Kroch (1989, 2021 [2001]) was adopted, according to which syntactic change is understood as a process resulting from competition of grammars. The overall results of this research refuted the initial hypotheses, showing a predominance of null objects (59,5%) over necessary objects (40,5%), differing from the findings of previous research on this phenomenon in nineteenth-century Brazilian writing, which reported a higher frequency of filled objects during that period. Regarding the syntactic-semantic aspects analyzed, the findings indicate a predominant use of null objects in syntactic island contexts, their use to refer back to antecedents with the syntactic function of subject, as well as the influence of the [+animate] feature of the referent for filling the object through lexical pronouns. Taken together, the results of this research support the hypothesis that, by the end of the 19th century, written Portuguese in Amazonas had already reached an advanced stage in the implementation of the null object, consistent with the properties identified for BP grammar. Therefore, considering the theoretical framework used, it can be said that the variation observed in the expression of the anaphoric ACC in this corpus does not represent internal instability of a single grammar, but rather the coexistence, and eventual substitution, of competing grammars (BP and EP). Thus, our findings provided relevant empirical evidence for understanding the syntactic change from a filled objects language to a null object language, and for examining its possible differentiated diffusion across Brazilian territory. Finally, this study contributed to the PHPB project by transcribing 100 historical documents. This database can support future research focused on describing the written Brazilian Portuguese across its broad territory, as well as contribute to understanding the changes it has undergone over the centuries.
