| Abstract: |
This work presents the mechanical design and the simulation-based validation of a four-degree-of-freedom (4R) robotic manipulator, in a revolute configuration with an RzRxRzRx joint sequence, conceived as a low-cost, modular platform. The parts were modeled in SolidWorks and manufactured by combining subtractive and additive processes: the L-shaped links were machined from SAE 1020 steel, and the couplings that fasten the commercial Igus ReBeL joints to the links were 3D-printed in PETG, with the prototype undergoing partial assembly. To command the arm at the position level, the forward kinematics and the Jacobian of the RzRxRzRx configuration were modeled, and the inverse kinematics was implemented using the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse, which translates the desired end-effector position into the corresponding joint configuration while handling the arm’s redundancy in the positioning task. The system was organized in a modular fashion on the ROS 2 middleware, with independent nodes for trajectory generation, kinematic solution, plant simulation, and performance analysis. Validation was carried out in the Gazebo simulator, in which the assembly was reproduced from meshes exported directly from the CAD model: the absence of collisions within the design joint limits was verified, and the end-effector trajectory tracking was evaluated, with each joint represented by a second-order plant model under PID control. The load capacity of the arm was estimated at 2.06 kg from the CAD model and the joint torques, in a calculation that disregards PETG failure modes an assumption supported by 3D-printed manipulators reported in the literature. The electronic integration with the physical hardware, through the CAN bus, was not completed and is recorded as future work. |
