Brazil is characterized by remarkable linguistic and cultural diversity. Despite this, language policies aimed at promoting and protecting minority languages have not yet been effectively implemented, creating challenges for the linguistic accessibility of Deaf communities. In this context, the work of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) translators and interpreters plays a fundamental role in promoting a bilingual society. However, access to Brazilian literature remains a significant linguistic barrier for Deaf students in secondary education. This study addresses the following research question: How are Deaf students linguistic rights ensured through access to Brazilian literature and to literary works associated with Brazilian literary movements in secondary education? The study is grounded in legal and educational documents, including the 1988 Federal Constitution of Brazil, Law No. 10,436/2002, Decree No. 5,626/2005, the Brazilian Inclusion Law (LBI), the National Book and Reading Policy (PNLE), the National Education Plan (PNE), and the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC). It also draws on the theoretical contributions of Campos (2017), Candido (1995), Quadros (2023), Rajagopalan (2013), Strobel (2012), Schlemper (2015, 2024), and Sutton- Spence (2020, 2021). The research was motivated by the author's professional experience as an Educational Interpreter, during which it became evident that Deaf students had limited access to Brazilian literary works because these texts are predominantly available only in Portuguese. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to analyze how access to Brazilian literature translated into Libras has been provided to Deaf secondary school students from the perspective of linguistic rights. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining bibliographic and documentary research through the mapping of the corpus of the extension project Librando: Compartilhando Literatura Surda. The analysis identified sixteen Brazilian literary works translated into Libras. However, only six were complete translations, while the remaining materials consisted of summaries or isolated chapters. The findings also revealed that none of the official documents analyzed (BNCC, PNLE, and PNE) explicitly addresses the translation of Brazilian literary works into Libras, highlighting a significant gap in Brazilian language policies and the absence of a specific policy for literary translation into Libras. The findings indicate that, in practice, Deaf students' access to Brazilian literature is not effectively guaranteed, since the scarcity of literary works translated into Libras prevents the full realization of their linguistic rights. These results underscore the responsibility of the Brazilian State to strengthen language policies for Deaf students and to promote initiatives that support literary translation into Libras. Furthermore, translations into Libras constitute an important resource for Educational Interpreters, contributing to their professional preparation and to the development of interpreting strategies for literature classes.
