OBJECTIVE: To understand the mental health profile of women during motherhood and to identify the issues related to the triple relationship between mental health, speech-language pathology, and breastfeeding. METHOD: An exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study conducted with women who had children up to two years of age. Data were collected through an online semi-structured questionnaire and analyzed using Thematic Analysis. RESULTS: Thirty-two mothers aged between 20 and 50 years, residing in the Southeast and South regions of Brazil, participated in the study. Four categories were established: (i) Affective experiences in breastfeeding, (ii) Support network in the breastfeeding journey, (iii) Challenges and pathways: maternal resilience in breastfeeding, and (iv) The contribution of speech-language pathology from the maternal perspective. Breastfeeding was experienced ambiguously, marked by both positive feelings—such as love, bonding, and personal fulfillment—and by suffering, exhaustion, physical pain, and emotional overload. The support network was associated almost exclusively with the partner. The performance of speech-language pathologists was limited but highly valued by mothers who received such professional support. CONCLUSION: Mental health during the breastfeeding period is deeply related to the quality of the experience and the presence of qualified guidance. When integrated into maternal and child care, Speech-Language Pathology can play a relevant role in promoting breastfeeding and providing emotional support to nursing mothers. The importance of strengthening interdisciplinary practices and expanding sensitive listening to the woman’s subjective experience in motherhood is highlighted. |
