Tradução comentada do texto parcial do livro "Eyeth - a young deaf man's perspective of the world" para a American Sign Language (ASL): desafios de tradução para além da primeira língua

Abstract

Esta dissertação explora o processo de tradução do capítulo \"Disadvantages of being Deaf\" do livro \"Eyeth - A Young Deaf Man?s Perspective of the World\", escrito pelo autor surdo Mavrick William Martin, do inglês escrito ? Língua Adicional, L3 ? para a American Sign Language (ASL) ? Segunda Língua, L2. A pesquisa adota uma abordagem prática e teórica, destacando as particularidades da tradução intermodal, que envolve a conversão de um texto escrito em uma língua oral-auditiva para uma língua gestual-visual. Além disso, a dissertação discute o conceito de Língua Adicional (L3) e Segunda Língua (L2) no contexto da tradução realizada por um tradutor surdo, considerando as nuances culturais e linguísticas presentes em cada língua e suas respectivas comunidades. O trabalho é dividido em etapas que abrangem desde as etapas iniciais, em que foram feitas gravações em Libras contendo comentários e reflexões sobre a tradução para ASL, até o processo de tradução propriamente dito, realizado em um estúdio com fundo chroma key. O processo incluiu a gravação segmentada do texto traduzido, seguida pela edição final, resultando em um vídeo de 45 minutos e 8 segundos. A dissertação também discute aspectos teóricos, como os conceitos bakhtinianos, e como esses influenciam a prática tradutória entre línguas de modalidades distintas. Além disso, são abordadas as complexidades culturais e linguísticas envolvidas na tradução de uma língua gestual-visual como a ASL e a importância de adequar os conteúdos para que sejam relevantes à comunidade surda estadunidense. Por fim, a dissertação contribui para o campo da tradução ao evidenciar os desafios e as nuances do processo tradutório envolvendo línguas de sinais, especialmente quando o tradutor lida com uma L3 e uma L2. Esses desafios incluem as dificuldades inerentes à compreensão e tradução de um texto em inglês, que não é a língua de trabalho principal do tradutor, e a adaptação desse texto para a ASL, levando em consideração as diferenças culturais e linguísticas. A dissertação destaca a importância da sensibilidade cultural e da compreensão das especificidades de cada língua e cultura envolvidas no processo de tradução.

Abstract: This dissertation explores the translation process of the chapter \"Disadvantages of being Deaf\" from the book \"Eyeth - A Young Deaf Man?s Perspective of the World,\" written by the Deaf author Mavrick William Martin, from written English ? Additional Language, L3 ? to American Sign Language (ASL) ? Second Language, L2. The research adopts both a practical and theoretical approach, highlighting the particularities of intermodal translation, which involves converting a written text from an oral-auditory language to a gestural-visual language. Additionally, the dissertation discusses the concept of Additional Language (L3) and Second Language (L2) in the context of translation conducted by a Deaf translator, considering the cultural and linguistic nuances present in each language and their respective communities. The work is divided into stages that cover everything from the pre-translation process, where recordings in Libras were made containing comments and reflections on the translation to ASL, to the actual translation process carried out in a studio with a chroma key background. The process included segmented recording of the translated text, followed by final editing, resulting in a video of 45 minutes and 8 seconds. The dissertation also delves into theoretical aspects, such as Bakhtinian concepts, and how these influence the translation practice between languages of distinct modalities. Furthermore, the complexities of cultural and linguistic aspects involved in translating a gestural-visual language like ASL are discussed, as well as the importance of adapting content to be relevant to the American Deaf community. Finally, the dissertation contributes to the field of translation by highlighting the challenges and nuances of the translation process involving sign languages, especially when the translator deals with an L3 and an L2. These challenges include the inherent difficulties in understanding and translating a text in English, which is not the translator's primary working language, and adapting this text into ASL, taking into account cultural and linguistic differences. The dissertation underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity and understanding the specificities of each language and culture involved in the translation process.
