| Abstract: |
Purpose: To characterize the audiometric profile of adults before and after COVID-19. Method: Descriptive, observational, quantitative, single-blind, longitudinal study. The sample was non-probabilistic for convenience, of adults who underwent a basic audiological evaluation before the pandemic and who agreed to undergo a new evaluation between 2023 and 2024. The evaluations performed were pure tone audiometry, high frequencies, speech audiometry and immittance audiometry, and the application of a questionnaire about having contracted COVID-19 and hearing complaints. At the end of the evaluations, the participants were distributed into the COVID-19 and Control groups. The data from the hearing evaluation were analyzed and compared considering the time of the evaluation and the groups. The statistical significance value adopted was equal to 5%. The results were also interpreted based on the effect size. Results: The two groups studied behaved similarly. The mean hearing thresholds were less than or equal to 20 dBHL for both groups and at both assessment times. The speech recognition index (SRI) was normal and there was no difference between the groups. There was good mobility of the tympanic-ossicular system and no difference between the groups regarding the absence of acoustic reflexes. There was no difference regarding the occurrence of cochleovestibular symptoms reported by the participants in the COVID group considering the time of the assessment. Conclusion: Adults who contracted COVID-19 have good auditory sensitivity, SRI within normal limits and good mobility of the tympanic-ossicular system, suggesting that, for this sample, COVID-19 did not affect the peripheral auditory system. |
