Rumo à glória: ética(s) na tradução de variedades linguísticas de Bound for Glory (1983), de Woody Guthrie

Abstract

O objeto de pesquisa da presente tese é a tradução, gerada em seu âmbito, de Bound for Glory ([1943] 1983), a autobiografia do músico, escritor e ativista estadunidense Woody Guthrie (1912-1967). A investigação é orientada por dois conceitos basais: 1 - o entendimento de tradução literária como transação comunicativa envolvendo relações de poder entre vozes intratextuais, tanto no texto fonte quanto no texto alvo (ASSIS ROSA, 2013); e 2 - a superação da noção de um tradutor atuando entre línguas e culturas, em direção a uma abordagem que o vê em um sistema maior incluindo as línguas e culturas fonte e alvo (TYMOCZKO, 2003). O livro de Guthrie narra sua infância no estado de Oklahoma, o amadurecimento durante as tempestades de poeira e a crise econômica que assolaram o Meio-Oeste do país, sua jornada rumo à Califórnia entre migrantes e pessoas destituídas, e o desenvolvimento de sua carreira musical. Uma das características do texto são as diferentes vozes intratextuais, muitas vezes constituídas por marcadores linguísticos sinalizando discurso divergente da norma-padrão do Inglês dos Estados Unidos da primeira metade do Século XX. Elas frequentemente se interpõem em representações de relações assimétricas de poder. Consoante com o trabalho de Marcos Bagno (2012, 2015), o tradutor se posicionou em relação à visibilização de variedades estigmatizadas e desprestigiadas do português brasileiro, usando suas representações literárias para considerar a heteroglossia do texto fonte, algo que já vem acontecendo com mais frequência no Brasil. A investigação hipotetiza que tal posicionamento é coerente para com diferentes dimensões éticas na tradução, que se realizam na produção de um texto alvo caracterizado pela manutenção da heteroglossia. Assim, além de oferecer uma tradução integral do texto para o português brasileiro, o objetivo primordial da tese foi verificar, através de classificações de Assis Rosa (2012, 2013) se a estratégia e os procedimentos adotados conseguiram dar conta de suas diversas representações de variantes linguísticas. Por fim, inserida no contexto da tradução comentada, e levando em consideração a dupla posição de pesquisador e tradutor, a tese traz uma discussão reflexiva sobre o processo tradutório e investigativo.

Abstract: The focus of this thesis is the translation of Bound for Glory ([1943] 1983), the autobiography of Woody Guthrie (1912-1967), an American musician, writer, and activist. The investigation is guided by two basic concepts: 1) the understanding of literary translation as a communicative transaction involving power relations between intratextual voices, both in the source and target texts (ASSIS ROSA, 2013); and 2) overcoming the notion of the translator as acting between languages and cultures, towards an approach that considers a larger context that includes both source and target languages and cultures (TYMOCZKO, 2003). The book chronicles Guthrie?s childhood in the state of Oklahoma, growing up during the dust storms and economic crisis that ravaged the country's Midwest, his journey to California alongside migrants and destitute people, and the development of his music career. One of the key characteristics of the text is his use of diverse intratextual voices, composed of linguistic markers that signal a discourse that is divergent from the norms of American English in the first half of the 20th century. These voices often intersect with representations of asymmetrical power relations. In line with the work of Marcos Bagno (2012), the translator positioned himself in relation to the visibility of stigmatized and discredited varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, using literary representations to address the heteroglossia of the source text, something that has begun to occur more frequently in Brazil. The analysis hypothesizes that this positioning is consistent with various ethical considerations that take place during the production of a target text characterized by the maintenance of heteroglossia. Thus, besides offering an integral translation of Guthrie?s text, the primary objective of the thesis was to use the classifications identified by Assis Rosa (2012, 2013) to assess whether the adopted strategy and procedures were appropriate to account for the representations of linguistic variants in the book. Finally, within the context of the translation, and considering the author?s dual position as both researcher and translator, the thesis offers a reflective discussion on translational and investigative processes.
