Emojis e suas funções: estudo de tweets à luz da gramática visual

Abstract

A acentuada difusão da Internet e das redes sociais, por meio do uso constante das Tecnologias Digitais da Informação e Comunicação, propicia mudanças significativas nos modos de se expressar dos sujeitos sociais. A partir desse cenário, os objetivos centrais desta pesquisa são identificar e descrever as funções dos emojis no uso concreto da língua. Em consonância com esses objetivos, o presente estudo se fundamenta nos campos epistemológicos dos Multiletramentos (MARCUSCHI, 2004; MOURA; ROJO, 2012; ROJO, 2009; SIGNORINI, 1995; STREET, 1984) e das metafunções da Gramática Visual (HEBERLE, 2012; KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2006; NASCIMENTO; BEZERRA; HEBERLE, 2011). A metodologia se desenvolve por meio da análise de tweets provenientes de dois países hispano-americanos, em decorrência do interesse da realização da pesquisa na língua de trabalho da autora, o espanhol. Os temas das duas amostras, que compõem o corpus analisado, são de viés político, ou seja, abarcam uma ampla dicotomia de discursos, sendo esses compartilhados de forma mais espontânea e aberta nas redes sociais. O processo de extração dos dados se realiza através da filtragem dos tweets no dispositivo Twitter Search, com as variáveis: idioma; hashtags; datas específicas; e ?tweets que tiveram mais repostagens?, juntamente com a coleta manual através da ferramenta de Print Screen. Ao término das análises, as principais funções dos emojis, identificadas e descritas nesta pesquisa, são: função de representação conceitual simbólica e função de composição com o valor da informação nas posições complementares esquerda-direita, na qual os emojis tendem a ser usados à direita dos enunciados como uma informação ?nova? e a inferir uma densa carga cultural na formulação de seus significados. Outro ponto importante, quanto à função de composição, é que a quantidade de enquadramentos depende do grau de interação entre os tweets, se correlacionando com a função de interação que, no Twitter, pode ocorrer nos planos aberto, médio ou fechado em uma escala de menor a maior interação, respectivamente. Com respeito às demais funções, verifica-se que no nível sintático os emojis aparecem predominantemente ao final de um enunciado completo, precedidos ou não de sinais de pontuação e seguindo uma ordem linear de tempo e ação. E no nível discursivo observa-se a recorrência do uso de emojis para demonstrar afeto e expressar emoções/ações, entre outras funções.

Abstract: The sharp spread of the Internet and social networks, through the constant use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies, provides significant changes in the social subjects? ways of expressing themselves. Under this scenario, this research aims to identify and describe the functions of emojis in the concrete use of language. In line with these central objectives, this study is based on the epistemological fields of Multiliteracies (MARCUSCHI, 2004; MOURA; ROJO, 2012; ROJO, 2009; SIGNORINI, 1995; STREET, 1984) and the Visual Grammar metafunctions (HEBERLE, 2012; KRESS; VAN LEEUWEN, 2006; NASCIMENTO; BEZERRA; HEBERLE, 2011). The methodology development is through the analysis of tweets from two Spanish-American countries, due to the interest of conducting the research in the author's working language, the Spanish language. The themes of the two samples, which compose the analyzed corpus, are of political bias, that is, they encompass a broad dichotomy of discourses, which are shared more spontaneously and openly in social networks. The data extraction process takes place by filtering tweets on Twitter Search device, including the following variables: language; hashtags; specific dates; and \"tweets with the largest amount of retweets\", besides considering a manual collection through the Print Screen tool. At the end of the analyses, the emojis? main functions are identified and described in this research, they are: symbolic conceptual representation function and composition function with the value of information in the left-right complementary positions, in which emojis tend to be used to the right side of utterances as \"new\" information and to infer a dense cultural burden in the formulation of their meanings. Another important point, regarding the composition function, is that the amount of frames depends on the degree of interaction between tweets, correlating with the interaction function that, on Twitter, can occur in long, medium and closed stages on a scale of smaller to greater interaction, respectively. Regarding the other functions, it turns out that at the syntactic level emojis appear predominantly at the end of a complete utterance, preceded or not by punctuation signals and following a linear order of time and action. And at the discursive level, it is observed an emoji usage recurrence to demonstrate affection and express emotions/actions, among other functions.
