Onion culture is extremely important in the state of Santa Catarina, both socially and
economically. The culture has high susceptibility to several diseases, among them the
Alternaria porri, can compromise bulbs production by 50 to 100% depending on their intensity.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of thermotherapy in seed treatment, using
different temperatures and exposure periods to control this disease. The experiment was carried
out at the Phytopathology laboratory of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, at the Center
of Rural Sciences - Curitibanos of Campus. Initially, onion seeds of cv. Boreal were evaluated
in relation to germination potential, according to the Seed Analysis Rules. To evaluate the effect
of thermotherapy on seed germination, they were submitted to the following treatments:
untreated seeds (witness); heat treatment 40ºC, 30 min; 50ºC, 20 min; 60ºC, 15 min; 70ºC, 10
min and chemical treatment with Captan-SC. Germination evaluations were performed on the
6th and 12th days after the treatments. To evaluate the control of the fungus A. porri, the seeds
were submitted to the same treatments and inoculated with the fungus. A germination
evaluation was performed twelve days after the treatments. The design was completely
randomized, using 4 repetitions. The data get were used in the Beta analysis model and the data
compared by the Tukey test (p <0.05). Regarding the results, the treatments 40ºC, 50ºC and
60ºC did not significantly affect germination, but the treatment at 70°C led to a reduction in
seed germination power. The treatments at 50ºC and 60ºC inhibited the fungus in 99.7% and
99.9%, respectively, not affecting the germination rate. Already the chemical treatment was not
successful in the control of the fungus. With the results it was possible to verify the potential of
seed treatment through thermotherapy as a viable technique for the control of the fungus A.
