Hovenia dulcis (Grape of Japan) is considered a potential species form the agronomic and the forestry aspect, it was introduced in agricultural properties as a form of shading in aviaries, due to its good size and rapid growth. However, due to its ecological characteristics, it is considered an exotic invasive species. In addition, it presents itself as a problem in the middle of Santa Catarina state; with emphasis on the Fritz Plaumann State Park (PAEFP) in the municipality of Concordia. It is estimated that 50% of the total area of this Conservation Unit is occupied by this species. In this sense, the study aimed to understand the Hovenia dulcis introduction history, to identify the main uses for this species, and to identify the potential native species for long - term substitution of H. dulcis. The study was carried out in the rural properties of the PAEFP, the buffer zone. The first stage of the study consisted in the identification of properties that maintained H. dulcis specimens and whose owners that had an interest and willingness to participate. This identification was performed using the "snowball" technique, followed by the application of a semi-structured questionnaire and data analysis by content analysis. Sampling sufficiency was evaluated through the rarefaction method. For the complementary analysis, it was evaluated the consensus among farmers regarding H. dulcis uses and the ordering for the species with potential to replace it. The second stage of the research consisted of a bibliographical survey about the H. dulcis introduction. In addition a time line was drawn up, identifying the period in which the technical recommendations for H. dulcis were initiated. The analyzes show that 100% of the informants use H. dulcis for firewood, and of the 34 species cited for substitution the most relevant were Ocotea sp., Parapitadenia rigida, Eucalyptus sp., and Apuleia leiocarpa. The technical recommendations based on the reports began in 1980 through for the shading of aviaries.
