De Makunaíma a Macunaíma: a tradução do trickster ameríndio para o inglês

Abstract

Neste estudo, investigamos a tradução de narrativas da cosmologia indígena pemon referente ao trickster Makunaíma, tal como reelaborada em Macunaíma (1928), de Mário de Andrade, e em suas traduções para a língua inglesa, com base na filosofia antropofágica e na poética xamânica do traduzir (Faleiros, 2019; Subirats, 2021; Viveiros de Castro, 2018). O objetivo central é analisar a relação intertextual entre o romance e seus textos de partida indígenas, estabelecendo um diálogo com o discurso crítico existente e os regimes de mediação estética e epistemológica que emergem nas traduções da obra. Como objetivos específicos, busca-se (i) examinar a construção da figura do trickster à luz das narrativas pemon de Makunaíma e seus irmãos, (ii) analisar as estratégias empregadas na tradução de termos de origem indígena para o inglês, e (iii) discutir os projetos tradutórios de E. A. Goodland, Carl Engel e Katrina Dodson, considerando tanto as estratégias adotadas quanto os paratextos que acompanham cada edição. Para tanto, apresentamos a categoria trickster e sua manifestação em culturas ameríndias, em diálogo com a Antropologia (Basso, 1987; Radin, 1956; Szyjewski, 2023), e o percurso desde os relatos do etnógrafo Theodor Koch-Grünberg até a publicação de Macunaíma e suas traduções. Os resultados evidenciam que as diferentes escolhas tradutórias moldam a recepção da obra no contexto anglófono, assim como a importância dos paratextos da tradução (Torres, 2011) na construção da figura de Macunaíma para o público leitor, reconfigurando seu estatuto estético e epistemológico na circulação internacional.

Abstract: In this study, we investigate the translation of Pemon indigenous mythology concerning the trickster Makunaíma, as reworked in Macunaíma (1928) by Mário de Andrade, and in its translations into English, based on the anthropophagic philosophy and shamanic poetics of translation (Faleiros, 2019; Subirats, 2021; Viveiros de Castro, 2018). The main objective is to analyze the intertextual relationship between the novel and its indigenous source texts, establishing a dialogue with existing critical discourse and the regimes of aesthetic and epistemological mediation that emerge in the translations of the work. As specific objectives, we seek to (i) examine the construction of the trickster figure in light of the Pemon narratives of Makunaíma and his brothers, (ii) analyze the strategies employed in the translation of terms of indigenous origin into English, and (iii) discuss the translation projects of E. A. Goodland, Carl Engel, and Katrina Dodson, considering both the strategies adopted and the paratexts accompanying each edition. To this end, we present the trickster category and its manifestation in Amerindian cultures, in dialogue with anthropology (Basso, 1987; Radin, 1956; Szyjewski, 2023), and the progression from the writings of ethnographer Theodor Koch-Grünberg to the publication of Macunaíma and its translations. The results show that different translation choices shape the reception of the work in the English-speaking context, as well as the importance of translation paratexts (Torres, 2011) in constructing the figure of Macunaíma for the reading public, thereby shaping his aesthetic and epistemological status in international circulation.
