Abstract: In this work, we propose the translation with commentary of selected pages from the comic Arlindo, by Luiza de Souza (Ilustralu), with the aim of reflecting about the translation of cultural markers present in the work, as well as the power relations established between Brazilian Portuguese, the source language, and US English, the target language. Arlindo was first published in the comic artist?s Twitter/X account between January of 2019 and December of 2020, being published digitally and in print by Seguinte in the following year. In the comic, Ilustralu narrates a journey of discovery and self-acceptance taken by the protagonist that gives the story its title, a gay boy who lives in Currais Novos, in Rio Grande do Norte. The story of Arlindo is lulled by songs by popular artists, told through regional accents and slangs, and set in typical places from Brazilian small towns. All of these elements represent cultural markers, items or terms that are recognized through their contrast with another language or culture in which they do not exist or do not present in the same way. Therefore, we assume Aixelá?s (1996) and Aubert?s (2016) conceptions of cultural markers, respectively from a sociological and a linguistic perspective, as far as the identification and treatment of these elements; and Aragão?s (2018) classification for cultural markers in multimodal narratives, which expands the presence of the elements to the image and the image-text relation. Through a translation with commentary and the use of translation diaries, it was possible to observe the different stages of the translation process, from the initial reading of the text, an inherently critical activity, to the revision, including different versions of the translation and the reasons for possible changes in the translated text. The accomplished translation is based on the asymmetrical power relation between the Brazilian and the US comics fields, noticeable by the strong influence of US models and works in the establishment of the Brazilian comics market (Hanna; Vergueiro, 2020); as well as a posture of challenging the hegemonic position of the English language in order to not cooperate with the conservation of the unequal power relations in which this language appears (Venuti, 2019a). 25 pages from Arlindo were translated, seeking to maintain the Brazilian cultural markers or explain them as much as possible, allowing the US reader to come into contact with a foreign culture and develop an interest for other Brazilian works. There were cases in which it was necessary to make substitutions and search for equivalences in order to prioritize the narrative told by Ilustralu, seeking, as well as before, the appreciation of the US reader for the translated work.
