Acupuntura no tratamento das disfunções temporomandibulares musculares

Abstract

Com o grande número da população que apresenta sinais ou sintomas de Disfunções temporomandibulares (DTM) e a necessidade de tratamentos cada vez menos invasivos e mais integrativos, a técnica de acupuntura pode ser um bom instrumento para melhora desses distúrbios. A acupuntura é uma técnica realizada há cerca de 2500 anos e possui poucas evidências de efeitos colaterais. O objetivo desse trabalho foi realizar uma revisão de literatura e um relato de caso de acupuntura no tratamento de disfunção temporomandibular muscular e verificar os resultados obtidos com os descritos na literatura científica. Para tal foram realizadas pesquisas nas bases de dados Scielo e PubMed necessárias para composição da revisão de literatura e paralelamente, um paciente diagnosticado com DTM muscular do Centro Multidisciplinar de Dor Orofacial (CEMDOR) foi selecionado, no qual a acupuntura foi utilizada no tratamento. Sua dor foi avaliada semanalmente, através da Escala Analógica Visual, bem como abertura de boca e palpação da musculatura e ATM. O caso relatado apresentou mudança da qualidade da dor e diminuição de pontos-gatilho, o qual condiz com a literatura científica, sugerindo que a acupuntura é uma ferramenta diferencial no tratamento das disfunções temporomandibulares.

The considerable population presenting signs or symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) has increased constantly, and a need for less invasive and more integrative therapy lead to acupuncture an instrument for improving these disorders. Acupuncture is a technique which has been executed for about 2500 years and it does not present many side effects. The aim of this study was to accomplish a literature review and a case report of acupuncture in TMD of muscle origin, as well to verify the results obtained with those described in the literature. For such scientific research, databases as SciELO and PubMed were used to compose the literature review, and in parallel, a patient diagnosed with muscle TMD was selected in CEMDOR (Multidisciplinary Center of Orofacial Pain), where acupuncture was used as treatment. Pain was evaluated with the aid of Visual Analogic Scale, as well as maximum mouth opening and Temporomandibular joint and muscle palpation. The case report showed changes in pain quality and reduction of trigger points, which matches with the scientific literature, suggesting that acupuncture is a differential tool in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders.
