Abstract: Cool roofs, that is, roofs with high solar reflectance, are an effective passive strategy for improving the thermal and energy performance of buildings in hot climates, but their performance declines as surfaces age. In addition, the economic benefits of this technique are difficult to quantify in buildings without air conditioning. This thesis evaluates the influence of natural aging and of restoration by cleaning on the thermal, energy, and economic performance of cool roofs, and proposes a method for estimating their benefits in buildings without air conditioning. Fiber cement tiles coated with eight commercial white paints, along with an uncoated tile, were exposed for two years in Florianópolis, São Paulo, and Manaus. Thermal emittance and solar reflectance were measured in the laboratory in the new, aged, and restored conditions, after the first and second years of exposure, and the experimental solar absorptance was compared with the value estimated by the Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 15575-1. The results were used as inputs for EnergyPlus simulations of a residential building, and the differences in indoor temperature were converted into an equivalent thermal load and then into an economic benefit. Emittance varied little, between 0.81 and 0.88, whereas solar reflectance was strongly affected by aging, with the largest loss, of up to 40%, occurring in the first year of exposure. Cleaning recovered a substantial share of the lost reflectance, in some cases back to the initial value, but unevenly across paints. Performance also differed among products: paint 3 gave the most favorable result and paint 8 the least favorable, which shows that a white coating does not guarantee equivalent performance. In Manaus, the equivalent economic benefit reached R$ 9.55/m² per year (about US$1.83/m² per year) for new samples, a figure that is an estimate tied to the reduction in thermal load rather than a direct saving on the electricity bill. The study concludes that cool roof assessments should account for the stability of reflectance over time and for roof maintenance. |
