Title: O gótico em tradução: análise de três traduções de The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896)
Author: Cunha, Maria Clara Oliveira da
Abstract: Esta dissertação examina como o modo discursivo do gótico aparece nas traduções brasileiras de The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), de H. G. Wells. Abstract: This work explores the manner in which the Gothic discursive mode manifests itself in Brazilian translations of H. G. Wellsâ s The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896). The present study is based on the Descriptive Translation Studies, analysing three translations: the anonymous 1910 translation, published by Livraria H. Garnier; Monteiro Lobatoâ s (1935), published by Companhia Editora Nacional; and Braulio Tavaresâ s (2012), published by Alfaguara. By examining translations produced at distinct historical periods, this study sought to understand how different translators reinterpret, update, or displace the tensions present in the novel, particularly those related to monstrosity and the anxieties of Victorian imperialism. The theoretical framework articulated Lambert and Van Gorpâ s (2011) four-level descriptive model, Touryâ s (2012) conceptual apparatus of translational norms, and Dâ Hulstâ s (2021) guiding questions for historiographical research, in association with the Gothic analytical framework based on França (2016), Hurley (1996), Halberstam (1995), and Brantlinger (1988). The analysis was organised around three axes of the Gothic discursive mode, as described by França (2016) â the haunting presence of the past, the locus horribilis, and the monstrous figure â comparatively examining excerpts from the translations based on the variorum edition organized by Philmus (1993). Given the existence of six different editions of the novel authorised by the author, the macrostructural analysis sought to identify the source editions used by each translator. The microstructural analysis demonstrated that the three translations produced distinct configurations of the Gothic: the 1910 translation preserved central ambiguities of the source-text; Lobatoâ s translation produced a more explicit and less ambiguous Gothic; and Tavaresâ s translation was the one that most systematically preserved the mechanisms of the Gothic discursive mode, maintaining semantic ambiguities, the rhythm of enumerations, and the gradual construction of estrangement present in the source-text. The results showed that the differences among the three translations reflect distinct configurations of the translatorâ s status, the translational norms in force, and the editorial conditions of each period, revealing how the translations actively participated in the reinterpretation of Gothic discourse within the Brazilian literary system over the course of more than a century.
