Abstract: In recent years, sustainable materials like residual ashes have gained emphasis in research due to their potential in replacing Portland cement (PC). Alkali-activated materials (AAMs) exhibit good mechanical properties, along with environmental and economic benefits. However, it is crucial to better understand the magnitudes of shrinkage that occur in both pure and mixed systems. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the shrinkage mechanisms in hybrid alkali-activated systems (AASs) based on metakaolin (MK), with the substitution of fly ash (FA) and rice husk ash (RHA). Initially, the density and mechanical strength of alkali-activated pastes (AAs) with residual ashes were investigated, varying the molar concentration of NaOH at 8/10/12/14 M for a 1:2 (NaOH) activating solution. Preliminary analyses showed good reactivity and mechanical strength of the materials with low activation; therefore, the tests were continued with 8 M for the hybrid AAs mortars, with 10% PC and 30% and 45% substitution of FA and RHA. The mortars were produced with a water/binder ratio of 0.55 and a 1:2 binder/sand ratio by volume, to analyze autogenous shrinkage for 56 days and drying shrinkage (RH=60±5%) for 63 days. The properties of the mortars in both fresh and hardened states were also evaluated, as well as the microstructure by XRD and FTIR. The results show that 30% of residual ashes reduce the effects of drying and autogenous shrinkage in hybrid systems with MK. Residual ashes improved the workability and prolonged the setting time of the mortars, in addition to providing a late increase in compressive strength, by about 40% from 1 to 28 days. However, as the amount of residual ashes increased, the mechanical strength and elastic modulus of the mortars decreased. On the other hand, ternary mixes showed better durability, with fewer free pores and lower water absorption. The ANOVA test confirmed that the precursor materials (PC, FA, and RHA) significantly influenced the results. The use of PC accelerated the reaction in the alkaline medium, forming C-S-H and (N,C)-A-S-H gels, resulting in rapid hardening and generating higher stresses in the system. Overall, ternary mixes with 30% FA and RHA help reduce the shrinkage problem in MK-based hybrid AASs. FA reduced drying shrinkage by 12.6% (T1), and RHA improved autogenous shrinkage by 31.7% (T2) compared to the REF mix. The reduction in shrinkage reaches 58% when comparing the results with the hybrid mix (T0). |
