Abstract: The need for more sustainable production systems that ensure animal welfare is increasing. Agrivoltaic systems have gained prominence because they enable the use of the same area for solar energy production and animal husbandry, providing shade and increasing land-use efficiency. Our objective was to evaluate parameters associated with the welfare of dairy heifers raised under different agrivoltaic system configurations during winter in southeastern Brazil. The experiment was conducted between July and August 2025. Microclimatic variables were evaluated, and the black globe temperature and humidity index (BGHI) was calculated to determine thermal comfort conditions. Vaginal temperature and the behavior of 21 dairy heifers were also measured in a crossover experimental design, comparing three treatments: an agrivoltaic system with vertically installed panels (AGRIver), an agrivoltaic system with horizontally installed panels (AGRIhor), and an open pasture system without shade (OPS). Data were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models, and results are presented as adjusted means ± standard error. Both agrivoltaic systems showed lower values (P < 0.05) for microclimatic variables and BGHI compared with OPS, except for relative humidity. Among the agrivoltaic systems, AGRIver provided the most favorable thermal comfort conditions. Treatments did not affect (P > 0.05) the vaginal temperature of the heifers. Regarding behavior, heifers more frequently remained standing while ruminating in OPS, whereas in the agrivoltaic systems they more frequently remained lying, ruminating in AGRIver and idle in AGRIhor. The frequency of visits to the water trough was higher in AGRIhor (20.2 ± 4.35 events/h; P = 0.001) than in AGRIver (14.7 ± 3.19 events/h) and OPS (16.5 ± 3.57 events/h; P = 0.09). Heifers in OPS showed a higher frequency of affiliative behaviors (3.92 ± 0.40 events/h) compared with AGRIver (2.91 ± 0.32 events/h) and AGRIhor (3.15 ± 0.34 events/h) (P < 0.05). Interactions with the photovoltaic panel structures occurred more frequently in AGRIhor (4.02 ± 0.91 events/h) than in AGRIver (2.41 ± 0.56 events/h) (P < 0.001). We conclude that both agrivoltaic systems provided a more favorable thermal environment than the open pasture system; however, different shade configurations may influence the microclimate and behavior of heifers even when the total available shaded area is similar. AGRIver provided the most favorable microclimate, improving animal thermal comfort, as evidenced by the higher frequency of lying rumination. In these systems, in addition to affiliative interactions, the animals were able to express scratching behavior by using the panel structures. Therefore, beyond providing shade, agrivoltaic systems may serve as environmental enrichment within pasture systems, further contributing to improved animal welfare. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effects of these configurations during periods of higher temperatures and to determine whether scratching behavior on the structures poses risks to the animals or affects the longevity of photovoltaic installations. |
