Abstract: This work proposes a comparative-descriptive study of cleft sentences and their constituent elements in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and Mandarin. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to describe and compare the main similarities and differences in syntactic construction, scope of use, and the components that constitute cleft sentences in the two languages, BP and Mandarin. Furthermore, a secondary objective is to describe and compare copular clauses, subcleft clauses (SCs), and relative clauses. These are constituents of cleft sentences, and it is necessary to understand their structure in order to: (i) differentiate cleft sentences from non-cleft sentences and (ii) compare the constituents in each language to properly classify the type of clefting and the type of focus in question. To this end, a comparative analysis was carried out regarding the clefting of the subject, the object, and other constituents of sentences in both languages. This study used as a basis authors who had previously conducted analyses of cleft sentences in the two languages separately: He (2011) for Mandarin and Krug de Assis (2001) for Brazilian Portuguese. Subsequently, the previous analyses were converged to propose an approach that unifies the representation of the two languages. Thus, this study adopted Den Dikken's (2006) predication syntax, applied and expanded by Resenes (2014), to analyze semicleft and pseudocleft sentences in both languages. Regarding the results of this study, among the main similarities found in Brazilian Portuguese and Mandarin, the following stand out: (i) both languages use a verbal copula and a complementizer to cleft constituents in sentences, (ii) both languages can omit one of these constituents and move the cleft phrases to different positions in the sentence, and (iii) both languages are capable of clefting the subject, the object, the adverb, and prepositional phrases. Regarding the differences between the two languages, the following are listed: (i) in Mandarin, cleft sentences depend more on context to be defined and resolve ambiguities than cleft sentences in Brazilian Portuguese, since the analytical structure of the language makes it difficult to differentiate between cleft and non-cleft sentences, (ii) in Brazilian Portuguese, pseudo-clefts have a wh-phrase, while in Mandarin there is a free relative clause with a null relative pronoun, (iii) in Mandarin, the verb of an SVO sentence is also cleft between the copula and the complementizer, while in Portuguese it is not, (iv) the complementizer may or may not accompany the verb in Mandarin, but in Brazilian Portuguese it must always precede it, (v) specifically in canonical clefts and standard pseudoclefts, there are no focused constituents before the copula in Mandarin, the focused constituent must always be after the copula, but this does not necessarily occur in Brazilian Portuguese, and (vi) there is divergence regarding the displacement of cleft constituents from the canonical cleft in both languages. Regarding pragmatic differences, there are politeness and stylistic distinctions in the use of cleft sentences. Similarly, there are semantic distinctions, such as the verb tense involved in the sentences and the types of focus that can be cleft. |
