Além disso foram determinados a mínima inibição bactericida (MIC) e a mínima concentração bactericida (MBC) contra Aeromonas hydrophila, Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus e V. harveyi. Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of thymol and carvacrol in the diet of juvenile silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and their effects on health status and zootechnical performance. Six diets with different inclusion levels of the phytogenic compound (0%; 0.01%; 0.02%; 0.05%; 0.10%; and 0.20%) were provided for 45 days to juvenile silver catfish in a controlled recirculating aquaculture system, evaluating growth, feed conversion ratio, survival, hematology, and cultivable intestinal microbiota. In addition, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined against Aeromonas hydrophila, Edwardsiella tarda, Vibrio alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus, and V. harveyi. The phytogenic compound did not affect weight gain, specific growth rate, or biomass, but increased feed conversion ratio at all doses when compared to the control group, without a dose-response gradient. Hematological parameters remained mostly unchanged, with an increase in mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and a reduction in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) only at the 0.01% concentration. There was no effect on cultivable bacterial counts in vitro. Bacteriostatic activity was observed for V. alginolyticus up to 0.25%, no inhibition was observed for V. parahaemolyticus, and inhibition of the other strains occurred only at 2%, with no detectable bactericidal activity. It is concluded that, under the tested conditions, the phytogenic compound presents limited antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative bacteria and does not promote zootechnical gains, potentially reducing feed efficiency. It is recommended to investigate lower doses and synergy with organic acids, as well as challenge trials and mucosal and oxidative stress biomarkers, which are more responsive for detecting health benefits associated with essential oils.
