Abstract: This dissertation aims to investigate how women in critical social situations give meaning to and experience motherhood. Drawing on psychoanalysis, we seek to listen carefully to women who experience forms of motherhood that are rendered invisible by hegemonic social discourse. This research stems from the professional practice of a psychologist working within SUAS, a public policy that provides services and programs to support individuals in situations of social vulnerability, with the aim of breaking cycles of violence and violations of rights. From a Freudian-Lacanian psychoanalytic perspective, we understand that motherhood, in itself, brings feelings of helplessness and loneliness to women, and this becomes even more arduous for mother-women affected by social markers of oppression such as social class, race, and ethnicity. In this dissertation, we begin our journey by presenting a theoretical discussion on the historical and theoretical trajectory of femininity and motherhood, with special emphasis on the psychoanalytic perspective. To compose the field of this research, we interviewed five mother-women who had been assisted by SUAS over the past two years ? women whose life trajectories are marked by multiple forms of exclusion, vulnerability, violence, and psychological suffering. The analysis of the interviews was conducted from the perspective of Lacanian Discourse Analysis, grounded in the singular listening to the chain of signifiers woven by each participant throughout the encounter with the researcher, as well as in the transferential listening to each narrative produced. Thus, we constructed analytical categories that, while respecting the singularity of each story, also point to collective and institutional experiences lived by the participants. Based on what was emphasized, repeated, and marked in the discourse of the participating mother-women, five analytical categories were produced and articulated with the literature review conducted over the two years of this research. The first category refers to the process of becoming a mother, starting from the assumption that the exercise of this function is not atavistic to women; the construction of the mother, the child, and the act of mothering itself are discussed at this point. Next, family ties that impact the fabric of motherhood are examined, highlighting that the maintenance of normative models does not sustain a motherhood free of impasses; on the contrary, they often become sources of suffering. Subsequently, maternal helplessness is addressed not as an element to be overcome, but as one that is renewed in the experience of mothering and which can be mitigated or intensified by the social bond. Following this, reflecting on motherhood in relation to public policies allowed us to understand how fundamental it is to articulate subjectivity, social bonds, and the structural conditions of society. Finally, the analysis turns toward the future and reaches the category of the woman-not-all-a-mother, asserting that the maternal position is not capable of eclipsing feminine desire; there is a remainder that escapes this function and keeps her desiring. Therefore, this research embraces the political dimension of motherhood, which implies displacing it from the field of individuality to that of collective construction, in the hope that it will be possible, through science, public policies, and collective progress, for women to experience motherhood in a less solitary way, while preserving the mother-woman as a subject of histories, rights, and desire. |
