Abstract: The burning of fossil fuels for energy generation constitutes the main source of greenhouse gas emissions. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2024, more than 90% of final energy consumption was concentrated in the industrial, transport, and building sectors, with the latter accounting for approximately 30% of global demand. In Brazil, despite the high share of renewable sources in the electricity matrix, the energy sector still faces decarbonization challenges. In this context, the growth of energy demand in buildings reinforces the need for sustainable solutions, with solar energy standing out as a promising alternative, capable of providing electrical energy through photovoltaic (PV) modules and thermal energy through solar thermal (ST) collectors. However, the conversion efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) modules decreases as the operating temperature of the cells increases. As a solution, photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) systems integrate both technologies, enabling the simultaneous use of the electrical and thermal forms of solar energy and increasing the overall efficiency of the system. Through an exploratory-descriptive and temporal bibliometric analysis, a gap was identified in studies considering residential applications of PVT systems, with no studies found in the Brazilian context within the databases analyzed. Thus, the present work evaluated the energy performance of two PVT systems equipped with a polypropylene (PP) heat exchanger. The first system, installed in a residence occupied by three people in Florianópolis and operating under real conditions, was analyzed under different days and demand profiles. The results demonstrated that the system was able to almost entirely meet the hot water demand, achieving consumption temperatures above 40 °C. In terms of thermal performance, the residential PVT system provided savings of more than 90% in the energy required for water heating on days with high solar irradiance when compared to a scenario of exclusively electric heating to reach the ideal shower temperature. The second PVT system consisted of a prototype developed to optimize the operating flow rate through experimental tests conducted between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM, with flow rates ranging from 1 to 10 l/min. The thermal gain of the fluid proved to be directly dependent on the flow rate, varying from 7.3 °C to 1.1 °C on days of high irradiance and from 2.6 °C to 0.4 °C on days of medium irradiance. The operating temperature of the PVT module remained, on average, 5 °C and 2 °C lower than that of the PV module under the respective conditions. Under clear-sky conditions, the PVT module achieved thermal efficiencies between 28% and 33%. Under medium-irradiance conditions, thermal performance was influenced by the thermal inertia of the system, resulting in average values of 36%. The analysis identified the range from 3 to 5 l/min as providing the best overall performance, with 4 l/min defined as the optimized flow rate. These results were validated by a numerical model developed in Python, which presented absolute uncertainties below 1% for the water outlet temperature and up to 10% for the operating temperature of the PVT module. To enable the use of the prototype as a pilot plant, its performance was compared with that of the residential PVT system using a previously defined consumption profile reproduced by a consumption simulator integrated into the PVT prototype. The results indicated that the prototype presented a thermal energy density approximately 25% lower than that of the residential system, a behavior expected due to the differences in scale and installation conditions between the systems. Nevertheless, the simulator demonstrated the ability to satisfactorily reproduce the established demand profiles. The uncertainty analysis indicated that the systems operated within metrological limits suitable for outdoor testing. |
