Modernidade além da ilha: arquiteturas novecentistas na região continental de Florianópolis

Abstract

Esta pesquisa concentra-se nas arquiteturas projetadas e construídas na região continental hoje pertencente à Florianópolis, capital de Santa Catarina, na primeira metade do século XX, um período reconhecido pela historiografia geral como característico da busca pela modernidade em uma época marcada por profundas mudanças econômicas, políticas e sociais e que, dentre outras coisas, desponta na reprodução de ideais progressistas ? principalmente a partir de um padrão europeu ? e na manifestação de arquiteturas elaboradas sob a ótica de distintas modernidades, vigentes simultaneamente. A partir de uma investigação no acervo de projetos da Secretaria de Habitação e Desenvolvimento Urbano de Florianópolis - SMDU e de um levantamento complementar das arquiteturas oitocentistas e novecentistas que ainda remanescem no contexto continental florianopolitano, registra-se a presença de uma variedade de arquiteturas da modernidade local elaboradas no período em questão. Assim, esta investigação objetiva a exposição dessas distintas obras do período analisado e propõe o reconhecimento de diferentes agentes projetistas dessa modernidade, tanto autodidatas quanto formados, que compõem o panorama da área da construção civil da primeira metade do século XX e que, em função da manutenção de uma historiografia oficial da arquitetura moderna brasileira, foram durante muito tempo invisibilizados das discussões especializadas, com seus projetos e trajetórias sendo preteridos por uma narrativa que se pretende oficial. O estudo sobre essas arquiteturas da região continental de Florianópolis também demonstra como tal narrativa oficial não contempla a diversidade observada na prática projetual e profissional de diferentes agentes dessa modernidade local que, entre diferentes possibilidades estéticas ? como as linguagens eclética, art déco, neocolonial, moderna, etc. ? integram o panorama de variados modernismos manifestados não apenas no contexto brasileiro, mas também no eixo ilha-continente da capital catarinense. Para além, o estudo sobre a modernidade da região continental mais próxima da ilha de Santa Catarina também expõe um simbólico distanciamento social entre ilha e continente, muito influenciado por um jogo de interesses políticos e econômicos que é determinante para o desenvolvimento socioeconômico que acompanha a área investigada e que, entre outras coisas, resulta na implantação no lado continental de diferentes estruturas não compatíveis com o escopo modernizador do lado insular.

Abstract: This research focuses on the architecture designed and built in the continental region now belonging to Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina, in the first half of the 20th century. This period is recognized by general historiography as characteristic of the pursuit of modernity in an era marked by profound economic, political, and social changes, and which, among other things, stands out in the reproduction of progressive ideals ? mainly based on an European model ? and in the manifestation of architectures built from the perspective of different modernities, simultaneously in force. Based on an investigation of the project collection of the Secretariat of Housing and Urban Development of Florianópolis (SMDU) and a complementary survey of the 19th and 20th-century architectures that still remain in the continental context of Florianópolis, the presence of a variety of local modernist architectures developed during this period is documented. Thus, this investigation aims to showcase these distinct works from the analyzed period and proposes the recognition of different design agents of this modernity, both self-taught and formally trained, who comprise the panorama of the civil construction field in the first half of the 20th century and who, due to the maintenance of an official historiography of Brazilian modern architecture, were for a long time rendered invisible in specialized discussions, with their projects and trajectories being overlooked in favor of a narrative that claims to be official. The study of these architectures in the continental region of Florianópolis also demonstrates how such an official narrative does not contemplate the diversity observed in the design and professional practice of different agents of this local modernity who, among different aesthetic possibilities ? such as eclectic, art deco, neocolonial, modern, etc. ? integrate the panorama of varied modernisms manifested not only in the Brazilian context, but also in the islandcontinent axis of the capital of Santa Catarina. Furthermore, the study on the modernity of the mainland region closest to Santa Catarina Island also exposes a symbolic social distance between the island and the mainland, heavily influenced by a game of political and economic interests that is decisive for the socioeconomic development that accompanies the investigated area and which, among other things, results in the implantation on the mainland side of different structures incompatible with the modernizing scope of the island side.
