Title: Uma investigação sobre a posição epistêmica do sábio
Author: Santos, Daniel Amaral Cardoso dos
Abstract: Esta dissertação investiga a posição epistêmica que fundamenta a figura do sábio. Abstract: This dissertation investigates the epistemic standing that grounds the figure of the wise person. Starting from the analysis of historical paradigms and the stipulation of conceptual desiderata? such as the impossibility of transmission via testimony, the accommodation of human fallibility, the need for diachronic evaluation, and the explanation of the capacity to advise?the study critically evaluates the three main alternatives in contemporary epistemology: knowledge, justified belief, and understanding. First, it rejects the reduction of wisdom to a form of propositional knowledge, focusing the critique on Stephen Grimm?s proposal. It is demonstrated that this approach faces a structural dilemma: it is too weak, as it allows wisdom to be theoretically acquired through the mere acceptance of testimony, and excessively restrictive, since its factivist condition (the commitment to truth) excludes from the set of sages paradigmatic figures from Antiquity who were subject to environmental epistemic luck and superseded scientific theories. Next, the study contests the alternative of justified belief, expressed in Sharon Ryan?s Deep Rationality Theory (DRT). It is argued that, besides the fact that evidentialist rigor does not prevent morally reprehensible deliberations from being rationally justified, the proposal rests on a strictly synchronic methodological assumption. Drawing on virtue theory, it becomes evident that evaluations based on isolated temporal snapshots are inadequate to capture the historical cultivation, narrative agency, and diachronic habituation of the intellectual virtues inherent to wisdom. As a solution to these impasses, it is defended that objectual understanding constitutes the true epistemic standing of wisdom. Because it requires the agent?s cognitive control and the holistic grasp of networks of explanatory relations, understanding demands an untransferable personal effort, not being susceptible to testimonial delegation. By adopting a non-factivist perspective, the theory manages to accommodate the possession of peripheral false beliefs by historical sages, while the dispositional skills of cognitive control enable counterfactual testing and the diachronic gradation of intellectual character. Finally, the research applies this thesis to the practical act of advising, rejecting its assimilation to constative acts of testimony. Good advice is defined as a performative speech act of a directive nature that operates as an epistemic mediator. To be successful, this mediator must be descriptive, adequate, reasonable, and intelligible. It is thus concluded that the deep understanding of the wise person is precisely what enables them to structure complex problems heuristically, generating understanding and orientation in those they advise.
