Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of two feeding strategies, namely BARF-type natural feeding (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) (NF) and a commercial diet specifically formulated for reproduction (CDR), on reproductive parameters, offspring growth performance, and the hematological and biochemical profiles of Siberian Husky bitches.. A total of 18 parturitions from 13 females were monitored during the gestation and lactation periods. Feed and nutrient intake, body condition score (BCS), reproductive indices, and offspring growth were evaluated. Additionally, hematological and biochemical analyses were performed before and after the reproductive period. Females fed the natural diet showed higher as-fed intake, but lower effective energy intake during gestation (p < 0.05), as well as higher protein intake. The CDR group showed greater stability in feed intake and better maintenance of body condition score (BCS) throughout the experimental period. A larger litter size was observed in the NF group (p < 0.05), although with a tendency toward higher early neonatal mortality. Offspring from the CDR group showed higher body weight throughout development. Hematological and biochemical parameters generally remained within physiological ranges, with no relevant differences between treatments. It is concluded that feeding strategy influences maternal energy balance, body condition, and offspring performance, with the commercial diet being more efficient in maintaining maternal condition and promoting offspring growth, whereas the natural diet may favor prolificacy, albeit with a higher maternal physiological cost. |
