Author: Nery, Gustavo Vieira
Abstract: Even before birth, human beings in contemporary society are shaped by expectations and teachings about how they should be and behave. This social production, often organized around the baby?s genitalia, is regulated by gender norms. Like gender, masculinity can be understood as a social and interactional production that regulates expectations, identities, and power relations. Through the reiteration of these norms, the idea of hegemonic masculinity is consolidated, associated with positions of power. Often sustained by logics of domination, exclusion, and violence, this form of masculinity, and those that approximate it, exerts power in specific contexts. In addressing gender-based violence resulting from these socializations, different strategies have been developed. In Brazil, an important milestone was the enactment of the Maria da Penha Law, which provides for the creation of educational and rehabilitation centers for men who commit violence. Among these initiatives are reflective groups for male perpetrators of violence, which aim to promote accountability and critical reflection on attitudes and masculinities, going beyond exclusively punitive perspectives. In these spaces, facilitators, professionals responsible for conducting the group reflective process, play a central role. This research aims to analyze the narratives of male facilitators of reflective groups for perpetrators of violence, seeking to understand the reverberations of this work in the (re)construction of their masculinities. It also seeks to map strategies used to deal with these reverberations, identify the use of masculinity performances in interventions, and investigate how intersectional markers influence professional practice. The study is grounded in social constructionism, post-structuralist feminist theories, and gender and masculinities studies. The methodology, of a feminist and qualitative nature, included semi-structured interviews with eight men who had worked as facilitators of reflective groups in different regions of Brazil for at least one year. The narratives were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that contact with the groups and with gender theories mobilizes continuous processes of self-reflection among facilitators, promoting revisions of their own histories and of the shared male socialization with participants. The strategic use of masculinity performances in interventions was also observed, as well as the intersectional mobilization of markers such as race and sexual orientation. Finally, it is highlighted that working in these groups involves high emotional demands, pointing to the importance of supervision spaces, peer support, and psychotherapy for facilitation teams. The study concludes that facilitating reflective groups is not a one-way process, but rather one of mutual and continuous (re)construction. Due to the high emotional demands involved, spaces for supervision, intervision, and psychotherapy proved essential. This work requires deep ethical commitment from professionals, showing that working with male perpetrators of violence means recognizing that, in this process of collective transformation, no one remains exactly the same as when they began.
