Graphitic cast irons (ductile and gray cast irons) are still widely used in industry due to their adequate mechanical performance, excellent castability, and competitive production costs. The combination of microstructure, chemical composition, and heat treatment enables the adjustment of their properties, making these materials suitable for a wide range of structural, automotive, and wear- and fatigue-resistant applications. Although the mechanical behavior and wear resistance of these materials are strongly influenced by graphite morphology, their properties can be further improved through modifications of the matrix microstructure obtained by controlling the chemical composition and the heat treatments associated with austenite decomposition. In this context, the amount, size, and distribution of the microstructural constituents can be controlled by selecting parameters such as the austenitizing temperature, cooling rate (continuous cooling), and undercooling during isothermal heat treatments. Consequently, a wide variety of microstructures can be obtained, ranging from those close to equilibrium, consisting of a ferritic matrix associated with coarse pearlite (after annealing) or fine pearlite (after normalizing), to non-equilibrium microstructures, such as tempered martensite and retained austenite (quenching or martempering followed by tempering), martensite and retained austenite (quenching and partitioning), and ausferrite, composed of bainitic ferrite and retained austenite (austempering). The amount and distribution of retained austenite have a significant influence on the mechanical and tribological behavior of these materials. Therefore, this study aimed to perform a microstructural characterization focused on determining the retained austenite content in FE42012 ductile cast iron and FC200 gray cast iron subjected to the following heat treatment conditions, all carried out under the same austenitizing condition (880°C for 120 min), quenching in oil heated to 170°C, and isothermal holding at 375°C for 120 min: (i) As-Cast (AC); (ii) Quenched and Tempered (Q&T); (iii) Austempered (AUS); (iv) Martempered (MAR); and (v) Quenched and Partitioned (Q&P). The samples were characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Vickers microhardness (HV0.3), and instrumented microhardness. The retained austenite content was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) using Cu-Kα radiation and quantitative stereology. The austempering treatment resulted in the highest retained austenite contents. However, the retained austenite values obtained for the austempering and quenching-and-partitioning conditions investigated in this study were lower than those reported in the literature. Both Vickers microhardness and instrumented microhardness decreased as the retained austenite content increased. Furthermore, the instrumented microhardness results allowed a qualitative relationship to be established between the applied heat treatments and the resulting microstructural constituents. |
