Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the relationships between social representations about food, the perception of risk in relation to harmful practices and the context of eating practices associated with systemic arterial hypertension. Social representations about food were described in their content and dynamics, in addition to being analyzed based on their structure, and eating practices related to the context of arterial hypertension were investigated and analyzed together with risk perception. The sample consisted of 341 people over 18 years of age. Data were collected through an online questionnaire composed of items with open and multiple-choice answers, in addition to a Likert-type scale. Textual data were analyzed using the IRaMuTeQ software and, for quantitative data, descriptive and inferential statistical analysis was used using the PSPP software. The results obtained demonstrate that the social representation of food is organized in a System of Social Representations that involves the representational objects health and body. In this system, nutrition is represented as the practice through which the energy necessary for the proper functioning of the body is obtained. Energy is obtained through healthy foods, which in turn guarantee health. The body is associated with the body-machine metaphor, involving functional aspects. Food is also represented as a moment of pleasure and socialization with friends and family, characterizing a food antinomy present in the health-pleasure dyad. This antinomy, which characterizes the core of meanings attributed to food, gives it the status of themeta. In the representation structure, the central nucleus is formed mainly by the health and healthy elements, having a close relationship with the pleasure element, present in the peripheral system and which in specific situations, according to the contexts of activation, takes the lead in the social representation of food. . The contents of the representation were not associated with gender variables or the diagnosis of high blood pressure, suggesting that the social representation is widely shared by participants. Regarding dietary practices, it was observed that in general there are no significant differences between people with hypertension and those without hypertension. The context of practices is predominantly positive, involving aspects that can contribute to better food control. It is suggested that this scenario is influenced by the socioeconomic characteristics of the sample. Regarding the risk perception regarding harmful practices associated with high blood pressure, a general high risk perception was observed. People with hypertension and women had a greater perception of risk. It is argued that knowledge of social representations about food, associated with perceived risk, produces a fruitful field for proposing health interventions aligned with sociocultural variations. It is recommended that actions to disseminate information about healthy eating and high blood pressure be developed taking into account gender and age variables.
